It was great to meet with Serra Verde Group’s CEO Thras Moraitis to discuss their ongoing production of rare earth elements in 🇧🇷 #Brazil and the sustainable development of global rare earth element supply chains. #SerraVerde’s rare earth elements project in Brazil closed a $150 million investment with Denham Capital Management and the The Energy and Minerals Group (EMG) from the 🇺🇸 #UnitedStates and Vision Blue from the 🇬🇧 #UnitedKingdom, which will help support the development of global rare earth supply chains. To learn more about the investment, visit: https://lnkd.in/eiaZ9TBv. Our cooperation with Brazil, across a whole range of energy transition solutions, is accelerating. Critical minerals supply chains are one area where Brazil can play a leading global role in providing the materials and processing for energy technologies. We know demand for these materials will only grow in the coming years and decades. The #MineralsSecurityPartnership is helping to meet that demand, alongside our partners and allies. This project is a welcome milestone of that collaboration. Please read the U.S. Department of State’s press release, here: https://lnkd.in/eAnahmTi. Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Laura Lochman just completed a productive trip to San Diego, where she delivered keynote remarks at the Institute of the Americas' #LaJollaEnergyConference. While at the conference, she met with Guyana's Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud to underscore our strong bilateral energy partnership. PDAS Lochman met with Heloisa Borges Esteves Empresa de Pesquisa Energética, Brazil to sustain our strong energy ties with Brazil. PDAS Lochman met with private sector companies at an event hosted by the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce to underscore our support for American companies. One of the highlights of her visit was visiting San Diego Gas & Electric and learning about their emergency preparedness. She saw the energy transition at work through her visit to start-up RedoxBlox, which makes a thermochemical energy storage product that can provide 24/7 zero-carbon industrial heat to industries including electricity generators. Additionally, during the conference, PDAS Lochman participated in an enthusiastic inaugural roundtable on Women in Energy and enjoyed meeting graduate students (and future diplomats) at UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS).

The IEA Opens a New Office in Singapore! Assistant Secretary Pyatt was proud to announce U.S. government support for the opening of the International Energy Agency (IEA) office in Singapore. On day two of Singapore International Energy Week (#SIEW2024), Assistant Secretary Pyatt delivered the closing remarks for the IEA Ministerial Forum. He noted “leveraging the expertise of the United States and ambition of our partners in Southeast Asia enables economic development and energy security in a part of the region that will demand not just more electricity, but also electricity that is cleaner, affordable, and more reliable.” An IEA office in Singapore reflects the markedly increasing influence of Southeast Asia in the global energy system. This office will focus on scaling up the deployment of clean energy technologies, improving access to finance for clean energy projects, and improving and increasing cross-border power trade. October 22 was also the release date for the IEA’s Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2024. The official report was delivered at #SIEW2024 by the esteemed Chief Economist of the IEA, Tim Gould, and serves as the benchmark for countries seeking to achieve climate and energy goals in the region. The report includes commentary on the impact of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine that led to high and volatile prices for fossil fuels, highlighting the energy security vulnerabilities of Southeast Asian countries. Russia’s war against Ukraine has reinforced the importance of energy security and raises concerns about dependency on imports, which underscores the importance of energy transition. ENR looks forward to how the newly established IEA headquarters shapes the energy narrative about this consequential region.
