Aligning Business with the Long-Term Health of Society
About us
Founded in 1998, we work with business executives and scholars to align business decisions and investments with the long-term health of society—and the planet. Through carefully designed networks, working groups and focused dialogue, the Program identifies and inspires thought leaders and “intrapreneurs” to challenge conventional ideas about capitalism and markets, to test new measures of business success and to connect classroom theory and business practice. The Business and Society Program is most known for the First Movers Fellowship Program, for dialogue on curbing short-termism in business and capital markets, and for fresh thinking about the purpose of the corporation. Despite ongoing debates about the role of business in addressing social and environmental issues, there is no question that the basic mindset of corporate leaders today is very different than it was even a decade ago. Sustainability and impact are much more top of mind, and future-focused leaders are integrating sustainability, impact and profitability with a sophistication that stands out from more traditional approaches. With more tools and skills at their disposal, such leaders are better able to prepare business for long-term success in an increasingly complex future. Welcome back to fall’s first issue of The Navigator! Looking ahead, we’re focused on the potential for business to shape a more positive future. This week, that means spotlighting some of the fundamental questions around corporate purpose, sustainability, and social action. What are the benefits and pitfalls of the current approach to ESG? How can we improve for the future? And as we take stock at the fifth anniversary of the release of the Business Roundtable statement on corporate purpose, what needs to be true to accelerate change and hold ground on commitments? As Judy Samuelson says in her opening essay, it’s time to get to work. As we close out the month of July, we want to thank all participants in our 2024 Aspen ESG Summit once more! Whether in keynotes, dialogue streams or just conversations over meals, your insights are what make this such an extraordinary gathering. Now that we've all returned from the mountains, we're curious to hear: What issue will have the greatest impact on the work of sustainability, social impact and corporate governance professionals between now and the next Summit? We asked a similar question in our poll to start the Summit; here we invite more open-ended responses (and recognize that there may have been some news events since the Summit shaping your thinking...!)
