Following Kamala Harris’ ascent to the top of the Democratic ticket, Equis Research surveyed more than 2,000 Latinx voters and found a significant jump in support for the Democratic ticket, a shift that the team is referring to as “the Latino Reset.” Stephanie Valencia, who studies voting patterns among Latinx voters across the country for Equis, spoke to The 19th about what it all means fewer than three months from Election Day.

Since launching her campaign a little over a month ago, Kamala Harris has raised $540 million — a fundraising feat largely bolstered by the Democratic National Convention last week, according to a memo released by the Harris-Walz campaign on Sunday. By comparison, the Trump campaign raised $268.5 million between January 2023 and this past July 31, according to the most recent Federal Election Commission filings. The Harris-Walz campaign’s total numbers surpassed the $500 million mark just before Harris gave her acceptance speech on Thursday night. Then immediately after her speech, the campaign saw the best fundraising hour since launch day, which resulted in a “record for any campaign in history,” according to the memo shared by campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon. Dillon said the donations from last week point to a new momentum since about a third of them came from first-time contributors. Here are other highlights: 🟣 The majority of those first-time contributors were women. 🟣 Almost one-fifth of the first-time contributors were young voters. 🟣 Teachers and nurses are among the most common donor occupations. Taylor Salditch, the executive director of Supermajority, a progressive grassroots organization focused on building the voting bloc of 18- to 35-year-old women, said she’s seen an uptick in first-time voters who registered in key battleground states. “Seventy-five percent of our audience are women of color and it is very true that young women of color are inspired by, excited by and feel committed to voting for this historic candidate,” Salditch said. “Folks are coming in because they are excited to nominate the first Black woman to the White House.” Women are typically underrepresented as donors in American politics, according to research from the Center for American Women and Politics. When they do, they are more likely to support a Democratic candidate than men are. Also, women across partisan lines disproportionately donate to women candidates. Women candidates are less likely to self-finance and are more dependent on small donations under $200. “‘The freshness of this candidate is making people think, ‘Oh maybe this isn’t business as usual,’” Salditch said. “Maybe I should be paying attention. Maybe I can engage in a way that feels good. Maybe we can actually get things done.” ✍️: @marielpadilla_, @jenniferagerson; reporters 📸: Kamil Krzaczynski/AFP/Getty Images

Project 2025, a 920-page policy blueprint created by conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation, lays out a far-right Christian vision for Donald Trump’s second term in the White House if he wins in November. It draws on the same harmful rhetoric that states have written into anti-transgender legislation by equating being transgender — or adopting “transgender ideology” — to pornography and declares that it should be outlawed. These ideas have drawn national attention for their far-reaching scope, but they didn’t appear out of thin air. They all have roots in anti-LGBTQ+ state legislation that conservative lobbying groups and think tanks have supported for years.

For close to a decade, periods — yes, menstrual periods — were an issue that could win legislative support in blue states and red ones. Research found that students who don’t have access to these products miss school days as a result, so states began passing bills mandating that menstrual products be readily available in public spaces — especially schools. Then, something shifted as anti-transgender rhetoric has picked up momentum in statehouses. Suddenly a topic just about everyone could agree on became a “liberal” policy, and bathrooms somehow became a space that needed to be policed.

For a few years now, whether it’s been clear or not, gender has become a test to pass or fail. Since 2021 , at least 177 anti-transgender bills have become law in states across the country, according to the Trans Legislation Tracker. And as these bills continue to impact trans lives, we are all taking this new gender test. To understand how the anti-trans agenda could reshape all of our lives, our reporters have set out to examine how anti-trans laws are impacting the lives of Americans, whether or not they are trans. The goal of our reporting series is to connect the dots that will show how these laws, intended to target a small minority, are rewriting the future for all of us, and for generations to come. This is the toll of America’s anti-trans war.

Minyon Moore’s name has never been on a ballot. She’s not giving speeches to thousands of adoring voters chanting her name. She’s not running to be the nation’s commander in chief. But she helped pave a path for Vice President Kamala Harris to do all those things — and accept the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination at the upcoming Democratic National Convention.

She helped create a more inclusive Democratic Party. Now she's leading the convention.
