  • TARIFF UPDATE: New insights from Mike Short following U.S. amendments that paused #tariffs on Mexico and Canada for USMCA-compliant goods: “Following the pause of tariffs on Canada and Mexico for USMCA-compliant goods, there’s been a notable trend of increasing requests for #USMCA qualification. Outside of the trade community, not a lot of people know you’re not automatically included under USMCA benefits just because you’re moving products across the border. Each shipper has to go through a qualification process. In the past, many avoided seeking qualification because it seemed like an extra step, especially on goods that were already duty-free. But with the new 25% IEEPA tariffs and latest announcement from the White House pausing tariffs on USMCA-compliant goods, shippers have a stronger incentive to go through the qualification process for all their products. However, it’s not as easy as flipping a switch. The process requires significant time and resources from the company and trade expert. As an expert in trade policy and handling 1.4 million customs transactions annually, C.H. Robinson started to see an increase of USMCA qualification and tariff classification requests before the announcement was even official. Now that the official amendments are published, these requests have only increased, and we expect this trend to continue.” “With all the changes in trade policy across North America and globally, and the potential for more with reciprocal tariffs under review, we're focused on helping our 83k customers with both short-term and long-term solutions to better protect their supply chains from external disruptions. As cost savings were identified as key to global shippers’ success this year in our 2025 customer survey, many of the solutions we’re bringing forward are tied to that goal in mind, including utilizing foreign trade zones, entry consolidation programs, paying CBP directly, and diversifying suppliers. While many supply chains have limited ability to pivot sourcing locations in the short to medium term due to the cost, it’s worth exploring alternative suppliers for future investment and diversification to better protect your supply chain long-term. C.H. Robinson’s Sourcing Analysis Tool is already helping shippers identify solutions in this area. The tool tracks sourcing trends and provides a comparison analysis to the rest of the U.S. market importing the same or similar commodities. This way, companies can identify alternative sourcing strategies and potential cost-savings opportunities.”
