  • Every year from September 15 to October 15, we celebrate National Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of peoples whose families and ancestors came from Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.   The September 15 start date marks the independence anniversaries of Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Guatemala. Just days later, Mexico and Chile gained their independence, making mid-September a significant time to recognize the struggles and triumphs of Hispanic and Latino people and the perfect time to begin the month-long celebration and recognition of their role and contributions to our nation. This year’s theme is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together” which serves as a reminder that, as a community, Latinos are contributing to our society. In fact, research shows that Hispanic/Latino-owned businesses are a dynamic and growing portion of the U.S., with more than 5 million firms driving $800 billion in revenue. For the Latino community, entrepreneurship can be an essential tool for building generational wealth and long-term economic mobility. In California, nearly 85,000 businesses are owned by Latinos, which contribute to more than 670,000 jobs and generate more than $25 billion in payroll income for the state. California has been home to a number of trailblazers of Hispanic/Latino heritage, including activist Sylvia Mendez, who at just eight years old, was the driving force behind what became a landmark legal decision that resulted in California becoming the first state in the nation to desegregate its schools, and Eric Quezada, a central figure in numerous social justice movements especially in San Francisco, involving affordable housing, land use issues, and immigrant rights, and Adela Vazquez, a Cuban transgender HIV/AIDS activist who battled for the protection and education of trans men and women. And that is to name only a few among the many. I would be remiss to not mention New York native, Justice Sonia Sotomayor who broke boundaries by becoming the first Latina, and the third woman, to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. She has ruled to uphold the Affordable Care Act, protect our civil rights, and legalize same-sex marriage, among other notable rulings, in order to ensure we have the health care we deserve and are free to be who we are. This month, I will be taking time to honor my heritage and thank my Mexican-born working-class parents, who came here to pursue a better life. Throughout this month, I hope you take the opportunity to celebrate this vibrant culture while honoring the long-standing contributions that have enriched our great state of California. Happy National Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month!  -Commissioner Ricardo Lara
