Since 2018, our World of Work initiative has empowered thousands of Cajon Valley students to envision their best possible future self and start on their path to gainful employment. As highlighted in this K-12Dive article, the impact of World of Work extends beyond our community. Four Pittsburgh-area districts have adopted our career curriculum model to benefit their K-8 students. “It builds a positive culture of belonging and self-awareness for our learners. I think that is probably the foundation for so many other things to grow and be nurtured,” says Michelle Miller, Superintendent of South Fayette Township School District. Kudos to South Fayette Township School District, DUQUESNE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT, Avonworth School District, and ELIZABETH FORWARD SCHOOL DISTRICT for their incredible work! We are thrilled to partner with you in transforming education and the lives of the next generation. David Miyashiro https://lnkd.in/g69TyJ2c

"Kids can't aspire to careers they don't know exist and research from the UK on early career development shows that kids foreclose on careers as early as 7 years old." This week on More Than A Test we will be joined by Dr. David Miyashiro, Superintendent of Cajon Valley Union School District. From his initial drive to teach all students coding, to discovering the diverse career paths within a company like Qualcomm, Dr. Miyashiro has continually evolved his methods to expose students to myriad opportunities based on their strengths, interests, and values. We’ll explore the unique curriculum he's spearheaded, which not only narrows the gap between open jobs and skilled labor but also resonates deeply with special education students and has expanded to districts as far as Pennsylvania. Be sure to tune in when the episode goes live! About Dr. David Miyashiro Dr. David Miyashiro is a forward-thinking, award-winning education leader with a 17-year career spent revolutionizing learning approaches, education models, and school district capabilities in Southern California. As a digital pioneer, he has navigated districts into the hi-tech era, delivering numerous innovation “firsts,” for which he has garnered professional honors. Those include Superintendent of the Year and recognition from the White House and U.S. Department of Education as one of the “Top 35 District Leaders in Personalized Learning.” Districts under his leadership have also won awards, such as the California School Boards Association’s Golden Bell Award, the National School Boards Association’s Magna Award for Digital Learning, and the California Distinguished Schools Award. He established the first Computer Science Magnet School in the U.S., pioneered a digital teacher academy, and forged collaborative partnerships with technology vendors for unique 21st-century education opportunities. His efforts earned the district acceptance into the League Of Innovative School Districts, selected by Digital Promise and the U.S. Department of Education as a National Model of Excellence and Innovation. He also designed and rolled out personalized technology learning programs for students and assisted the White House and the U.S. Department of Education in forming a National Personalized Learning Plan.

If this is the trend with Gen Z, what will the state of career readiness be for generations that follow? K-12 must be a part of the solution by taking steps to ensure that graduates are truly "career ready" by providing comprehensive exploration and work-based learning activities beginning in elementary school. The "World of Work" approach that Cajon Valley Union School District has implemented is a great example of what this can look like. Big Picture Learning's support for internships for all high school students ("Leaving to Learn") is another great model.
Prospective employers say that Gen Z applicants are not job ready. Here's what's behind it, and how adjustments can be made.

...To improve those outcomes, Cajon Valley Union School District, starting in 2015, developed and began piloting the “World of Work,” a K-8 program in which students explore career interests and learn how skills like organization, investigation, or interacting with people underlie different jobs. Now, the district is working with the testing group ETS and the University of San Diego to assess those skills. Dave Miyashiro https://lnkd.in/gcEcTvjK
