Our mission is to sustainably manage the water resources of California.
About us
In 1956, the Legislature passed a bill creating DWR to plan, design, construct, and oversee the building of the nation's largest state-built water development and conveyance system. Today, DWR protects, conserves, develops, and manages much of California's water supply including the State Water Project which provides water for 27 million Californians and 750,000 acres of farmland Working with other agencies and the public, DWR develops strategic goals, and near-term and long-term actions to conserve, manage, develop, and sustain California's watersheds, water resources, and management systems. DWR also works to prevent and respond to floods, droughts, and catastrophic events that would threaten public safety, water resources and management systems, the environment, and property. Balancing the State's water needs with environmental protection remains a long-term challenge.

The Sacramento Kings and our King (Chinook) Salmon share a lot more in common than you might think. While the basketball team celebrates with a purple beam, DWR has a bioacoustic fish fence which is just as flashy and has way more bubbles! DWR is reducing flood risks for 780,000 people in Sacramento, West Sacramento, & Woodland with the Lower Elkhorn Basin Levee Setback Project. This project increases bypass capacity & reduces flood stage in the Sacramento River & Yolo Bypass. It lowers the Sacramento River in conjunction with the Sacramento Weir Widening Project by approximately one foot during high flow events and protects around $53 million in assets at risk of flooding. #CAFloodPrepWeek #FloodPreparednessWeek

California’s aging water infrastructure was not originally built to cope with the intense boom-and-bust drought patterns we now regularly experience due to climate change. Essential infrastructure modernization projects like the Delta Conveyance Project will update conveyance infrastructure in the Delta and protect supplies by capturing water when it is available to better endure dry years. Failing to move this project forward will result in continued losses year after year and would strand decades of previous infrastructure investments made by local public water agencies on behalf of their communities.
