Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) is a game-changer for thermoelectric materials, providing faster sintering with precise control over properties that directly impact performance. Unlike conventional methods, SPS allows for the rapid consolidation of powders at lower temperatures, helping to maintain the nano-scale structures crucial for optimizing the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity in thermoelectric materials. This makes SPS ideal for high-performance thermoelectrics that convert waste heat into electricity. At Cal Nano, we’ve sintered thousands of thermoelectric samples, advancing the field with materials like bismuth telluride (BiTe) and lead telluride (PbTe). Presented by: Christopher Melnyk, Director of Business Development, California Nanotechnologies Inc Showcase Description: This presentation explores the advantages of combining advanced cryogenic milling and Field-Assisted Sintering Technology (FAST), also known as Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). These processes offer a revolutionary approach to synthesizing novel materials, particularly High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) and high-temperature ceramic composites. Cryogenic milling, performed below -150°C, creates powders with controlled microstructures and particle sizes ranging from conventional to nano-scale. FAST SPS diffusion bonds solids and rapidly consolidates powdered materials into dense, high-performance components using pressure and pulsed direct current, resulting in several advantages. These integrations reduce processing time and allow for rapidly exploring various compositions and structures. The developed materials exhibit superior mechanical, thermal, and corrosion properties, making them ideal for arrays of emerging technologies including Hypersonics, Fusion, and Green Energy. Earlier this year, we had the opportunity to install the SPS2000 system for Professor Castro and his team, and now we're thrilled to see in a recent video from his lab! The video is showcasing Prof. Castro's work with the Engineering Superheroes initiative. In line with this, Cal Nano is committed to sharing our advanced technologies with the next generation of engineers and innovators. We believe in empowering young minds by giving them hands-on exposure to cutting-edge tools like our SPS systems, paving the way for future breakthroughs. It was an incredible experience helping to install their system, and we’re excited that Cal Nano will soon be installing our very own brand new SPS2000 system in our new Santa Ana facility this October! This summer, I had an incredible 12-week summer internship at California Nanotechnologies Inc (TSX.V: CNO.V, OTCMKTS: CANOF) working with a dedicated team at the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) laboratory in Cerritos, CA. I directly contributed to R&D projects commissioned by national labs, universities, and companies in the industry by setting up and running the SPS experiments and performing characterization work on the samples making for a truly amazing and worthwhile experience. During my time, I gained valuable hands-on dexterity skills to help me in future high-precision experimental work. I also learned and applied the theory of SPS by operating the 7.4 SPS machine on numerous metallic and ceramic samples with different dimensions. Most of the samples I sintered were cylindrical and had diameters ranging from 1.6 to 6.5 inches, heights of ~0.1 to ~3 inches, and masses of ~30 grams to over 6.5 kilograms! I am so thankful to Eric Eyerman for giving me this wonderful summer internship opportunity. It was a pleasure being mentored by Brian Weinstein, CMfgT and Grant Campbell and working closely with Evander Ramos and Tucker Moody in the SPS lab. I got a taste of what it’s like working in the industry and had a great time!

Check out the newest addition to our lab. We have just installed the HB800 from EDM Performance. This advanced equipment significantly enhances our capabilities in precision cutting and custom tooling. We use it to create specialized SPS tooling and for precision cutting of specimens after SPS processing. Wire EDM technology is known for its ability to cut intricate designs with high accuracy, and the HB800 takes it a step further with improved speed and reliability. We're looking forward to using this machine to deliver even more precise and custom solutions for our clients. Cal Nano is pleased to announce the commissioning of its new manufacturing facility in Santa Ana, California. The 19,500-square-foot facility is operational with the large MSP-5 Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) machine and cryomills now available for production for customers. This marks an important milestone in expanding the Company's manufacturing capabilities and footprint. This expansion provides the necessary infrastructure to operate its recently purchased equipment and creates additional space for potential production requirements, warehousing, and custom tooling. This infrastructure includes increased electrical current capacity, liquid nitrogen storage, and other associated upgrades. “We are proud to open a first-of-its-kind facility in North America, which will bring commercial access to state-of-the-art technologies and machinery for processing advanced materials,” stated CEO Eric Eyerman. “We have already started to run our first parts on the new MSP-5 machine for our green steel cleantech customer.
