Connecting Trees, People, and Communities

About us

California ReLeaf’s mission is to empower grassroots efforts and build strategic partnerships that preserve, protect, and enhance California’s urban and community forests. Since 1989, California ReLeaf has worked to promote alliances among community-based groups, individuals, industry, and public agencies, encouraging each to contribute to the livability of our cities, public health, and environmental protection by planting and caring for trees. Urban and community forests consist of the trees and vegetation where people live and work, including the trees in yards and along residential streets, in parking lots, along commercial thoroughfares, on school grounds, and in parks and open spaces. With more than 94% of Californians living in an urban area, urban forests are integral to the health and well-being of our communities. California ReLeaf is the only entity that serves all of the community-based urban and community forestry organizations in the state. Our work with local organizations allows us to efficiently gather and disseminate information and resources, while also having a “big picture” understanding of trends, needs, or opportunities. Our leadership and support enable even small grassroots organizations to implement tree planting, tree care, and environmental education projects and programs that improve the neighborhoods, public places, and landscapes of California’s urban and suburban communities.

Congrats to our California Arbor Week grantee, SLA Inc., who completed their tree-planting grant project generously sponsored by Edison International. 🌳 🙌 SLA Inc.'s Arbor Week Grant Project was created to tackle a pressing issue in the City of Compton: the shortage of trees and shade. In some areas of the city, the tree canopy is as low as 3-5%. The absence of trees worsens the urban heat island effect, causing sidewalks and parking lots to become scorching hot, especially during extreme heat events. A recent UCLA heat study revealed that residents of Compton were at a higher risk of emergency room visits due to extreme heat, largely because of disparities in shade. SLA Inc. aimed to help address this need by collaborating with the City of Compton to plant trees along Wilmington Avenue. The project sought to improve the quality of life for community members by providing relief from harsh sunlight and creating inviting outdoor spaces for leisure and recreation. Additionally, aspects of the project were customized to meet specific community needs, such as selecting tree species suitable for the local climate. SLA Inc. organized its tree planting event on March 9th during Arbor Week and involved local neighbors in the effort. SLA Inc., in partnership with the City of Compton and Assemblymember Mike Gipson's office, and engaged residents and families from the neighborhood to participate in the tree planting. Community members worked together to plant 15 new trees along Wilmington Avenue. Following the tree planting, SLA Inc. hosted a community gathering where they provided more information about tree care and celebrated the community's collaborative efforts in creating a sustainable and resilient environment for current and future generations. Tree Cheers to our grantee SLA Inc., and big thanks to our grant sponsor, Edison International, as well as the ongoing support we receive from California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and the USDA Forest Service, who help make these small grants possible! Congrats to our Growing Green Communities grantee, Real Options for City Kids (R.O.C.K.), who completed their tree-planting grant project generously sponsored by Pacific Gas and Electric Company. 🌳🙌 Real Options for City Kids (R.O.C.K.) is a nonprofit dedicated to providing academic and social support for at-risk youth in Visitacion Valley. The organization decided to address the lack of trees on the school campuses they serve. With grant funds from Growing Green Communities, R.O.C.K. partnered with three Visitacion Valley Schools, local nonprofits, and community groups, to organize tree planting and educational events. Many of the programs engaged after-school program participants. Students and their families were invited to participate in campus-wide clean-ups during their spring events. R.O.C.K., along with community partners like Visitacion Valley Greenway, also led tree and community garden plantings where students, with adult guidance, worked together to plant fruit and shade trees. This included discussions on how to plant a tree, what the tree needs to survive, and prepping the soil for planting. Perhaps the most significant engagement and takeaway was that students and families were able to contribute to their school campuses and their neighborhood gardens, beautifying the outdoor spaces and contributing to the local ecology. Tree Cheers to our grantee, R.O.C.K., and big thanks to our grant sponsor, Pacific Gas & Electric Company, and the ongoing support we receive from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and the USDA Forest Service, who help make these small grant programs possible!
