This week’s Product Walk Through is with CallidusAI, a new legal genAI platform that addresses both litigation + transactional needs. It’s one of the most comprehensive legal tech startups this site has seen in a while and handles multiple legal tasks from the get-go. Taking us through what the multi-capability product can do is co-founder Anoop Singh - (who recently did the great piece on the Jevons Paradox for AL). Callidus was also one of several legal tech startups that took part in the Legal Innovators California conference in San Francisco in June this year as part of the dedicated Startup Gallery. Great to see how they are progressing 🚀 LINK: https://lnkd.in/e59FZYTY #legaltech #genAI #startups #multicapabilityplatformfromdayone

The recent formal opinion from the ABA, Formal Opinion 512, is a watershed moment for Legal and Legal AI. Three items stood out to us here at CallidusAI: -Recognition of the power of AI for legal -Realizing the importance of keeping the “lawyer in the loop” -Anticipating changes to the billable hour model The Power of AI for Legal: The formal opinion declares “GAI [generative AI] tools offer lawyers the potential to increase the efficiency and quality of their legal services to clients.” Both clients and attorneys want superior service. And turning around that service more quickly is a boon for clients. A capability that can deliver both is obviously a game changer. What is pivotal is the clear articulation from such an august body. It puts to rest questions about what legal AI can be. It states clearly what the end-game for legal AI potentially is - an innovation that elevates the legal profession, delivers more for clients, and by extension can have a positive impact on society more broadly. The Importance of the “Lawyer in the Loop:” The opinion states “A lawyer’s reliance on, or submission of, a GAI tool’s output—without an appropriate degree of independent verification or review of its output—could violate the duty to provide competent representation as required by Model Rule 1.1. While GAI tools may be able to significantly assist lawyers in serving clients, they cannot replace the judgment and experience necessary...." The ABA correctly, we believe, sees the lawyer continuing to play a most critical role in the delivery of legal services. Legal AI is a technology tool that at its best can begin to mimic a junior attorney in certain circumstances. In both cases, whether a tool or a junior attorney, review by the attorney is paramount. And that’s the same with legal AI. The Billable Hour: COVID did not pivot the world to work-from-home; instead, it accelerated an existing trend towards more remote work. Similarly, the legal profession has already begun thinking about the billable hour model. There are three considerations regarding the billable hour with respect to legal AI: -The existing shift towards less billable hour models already underway -The underbilling by many firms - it is common for attorneys to work about twice as much as they actually bill -Jevons Paradox - the increase in legal work that will come as cost-to-access legal work, whether measured in dollars or in time taken, decreases Taken together, though attorneys are guided to bill commensurately to their hours worked, which may and should decrease with AI, there are other factors at play that will entirely countervail that decrease. Overall, the formal opinion by the ABA firmly speaks to the power of legal AI and the coming change the legal profession will see. And this change will be for the better, for both the profession and its clients.

How are VCs and other investors viewing the legal tech space? Overall, as evidenced by the flurry of activity, venture capital and other investors see enormous potential and are putting their money behind that conviction. There is still some maturation to come, but big bets are being placed today. More specifically, investors see: (1) A massive overall opportunity. Goldman Sachs shared how they see up to half of legal work being automated. And legal spend is nearly a trillion dollars, making for a large opportunity. (2) A broad opportunity. The legal profession is comprised of numerous practice areas, organization types, organization sizes, and other ways to segment the space. This permits myriad different solutions to have space to take root. (3) Proof points and green shoots on product-market-fit. Attorneys are leveraging legal AI today, which gives confidence that adoption is here. (4) No clear winner yet (and perhaps ever, given the nature of the space), fueling the excitement to make investments. https://lnkd.in/gcxykvvW

How do you do an hour's worth of tedious contract analysis in just two minutes instead? This video shows you exactly how. This is a common task - comparing a proposed final agreement with an LOI. The final agreement is 60 pages, so analyzing it - reading it, comparing it to the LOI, evaluating it for other unfavorable items, and putting together a revision plan - can take an hour or more. With CallidusAI, that same work happens in under two minutes. And with high quality. This video shows you exactly how that's done.

Why does a CallidusAI customer want to name their cat after us? 🐈 CallidusAI is fortunate to have thousands of users. In this blog post, we share insights on what our users think about the platform. We’re not holding back! AI lawyers have high expectations about legal AI and about legal workflow and document output automation; we share here what our customers find works well and where the hiccups are. Hopefully, these insights are useful for those looking to get the most out of the platform. Important note: Here at CallidusAI, we treat security and confidentiality with the utmost priority. We cannot read our client’s data. We receive insight through direct interaction with our clients, where they share insights of their own volition. Additionally, our platform analytics can tell us which broad modules – e.g., research, contract redlining, etc. – are being used; we are not able to see what they’re used for, specific data input into the platform, or anything else that would compromise the integrity of our customers’ relationships with their clients or our customers’ professions. The three main takeaways are: (1) Law firm customers get great value in our industry-leading Legal Research & Analysis module. This takes days of effort and condenses into minutes, including automatically AI-generated briefs and memos that are well organized, cited, and lengthy. (2) In-house attorneys leverage the Compare Contracts, Review Terms, and General AI Assistant modules to redline contracts and do document analysis. (3) By-and-large, customers find the UX to be highly intuitive. We do have improvements to make to ensure all users get to the right capability or module for their action. (4) One customer loved the product so much that they want to name their cat "CallidusAI." https://bit.ly/4cN4uU0
