It's National Public Lands Day! CalWild works to protect forever the special, unique, beautiful and biotically rich places on California's federal public lands. As nearly half of the state is federally managed, our work is essential for reaching the state's "30x30" goal to protect 30% of its habitat lands by 2030. Today we celebrate the magnificent beauty, cultural significance, recreational opportunities and restorative power offered by California's public lands! Join our company in protecting California’s public lands! As one of the many companies #MobilizingforMonuments, we are speaking up to protect the outdoors. We are joining the Pit River Tribe, local community members, and elected officials in calling on President Joe Biden to designate the Sáttítla National Monument in Northern California! Sáttítla would protect over 200,000 acres of public lands, critical water resources, and a place where families come to camp, hike, bike, and seek solitude. Join us in advocating for this new national monument by signing the petition: https://lnkd.in/gZhvEQ7S 📸 : by Bob Wick

At the behest of the Biden administration, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is considering whether or not to adopt a new rule called the National Old-Growth Amendment (NOGA) that could, if the final version is strong enough, protect most of the remaining ancient trees in America’s National Forests from logging. We urge you to make your voice heard by September 20th by urging the USFS to end all old-growth logging. Unfortunately, the USFS’ Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the NOGA does not do enough to protect ancient trees from ongoing threats like commercial logging. The few ancient trees in California’s twenty National Forests are our most fire-resistant and resilient remaining trees, are essential to sustaining our water quality, provide critical habitat for wildlife and plant species as they deal with the stresses of a warming planet and habitat loss, and help us fight climate change. Please urge the USFS to adopt a strong final version of NOGA by THIS FRIDAY, September 20th. PLEASE VISIT https://lnkd.in/gGEYJXec FOR DETAILS ON SUBMITTING YOUR COMMENT LETTER And thank you for helping with this important action!

"California has entered an era of megafire." Obi Kaufmann wrote a beautiful and important article about the Age of the Megafire. California is facing a new era of massive wildfires, driven by a mix of climate change and long-standing land management issues. The piece explores how these fires are reshaping the state and affecting both natural landscapes and human communities. https://lnkd.in/g7F9aSnt "... the word megafire refers to any fire that is larger than 100,000 acres (156 square miles). Eighteen of the 20 largest wildfires in the past 200 years have occurred since the year 2003."

Thank you REI Regional Director Southern California Greg Mellinger for calling on President Joe Biden to designate the proposed Chuckwalla National Monument in the CA Desert! His recently published opinion piece highlights the economic benefit of outdoor recreation for local communities: “Supporting Chuckwalla is not just about preserving a landscape; it's about investing in the future of outdoor recreation and the people, businesses, and communities that depend on it. By advocating for its protection, we not only safeguard a haven for outdoor enthusiasts but also ensure sustainable economic growth for years to come.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gQ-rWdsN
