ICYMI: Reps. Don Bacon (R-NE) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) introduced the Reporting Medical Debt Payments as Positive Consumer Credit Information Act of 2024. Capio proudly supports this legislation, which will enable the adoption of positive credit reporting for on-time medical debt repayments. We know positive credit reporting has untold benefits because it has been a longstanding practice for mortgage and car loan payments. Medical debt payments should be no different – especially since most people want to pay their bills on time. 96% of patients currently do make on-time medical debt payments and they deserve to get credit for their positive behavior. The Reporting Medical Debt Payments as Positive Consumer Credit Information Act of 2024 would give patients credit where credit is due, and we are proud to support this legislation that will help patients build strong financial futures. https://lnkd.in/gq3_s6-v #ReportingMedicalDebtPaymentsas PositiveConsumerCreditInformationActof2024 #PositiveReporting #Capio

Positive credit reporting is a balanced, thoughtful way of relieving the burden of medical debt for Americans. By rewarding consumers for on-time medical debt repayment, consumers are incentivized to repay their debts while putting themselves on the path to long-term financial wellness by boosting their credit scores. Don’t just take our word for it. Positive credit reporting is a standard practice for mortgage and car loans – and it has also had recent success in other industries too. In a rent reporting pilot program, the Credit Builders Alliance found that reporting on-time rent payments helped boost consumer credit scores. We are proud to champion positive credit reporting as a balanced solution to the medical debt crisis and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and other stakeholders to pave the best path forward for patients and providers. https://lnkd.in/gDV4gdxF #CapioCares #MedicalDebt #PositiveReporting #BuildingCreditTogether

Mark Detrick, CEO of Capio, recently penned an op-ed in American Banker highlighting the potential unintended consequences of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) proposed rule to ban medical debt from consumer credit reports. He also shared some insights on potential alternative solutions that truly prioritize patients’ financial well-being. The CFPB’s proposed rule is well-intended, but could lead to increased litigation against patients, discourage timely debt payments, and further the financial strain on small and rural healthcare providers. That’s why Capio advocates for patient-centered solutions like #positivereporting which rewards timely payments, helping patients build their credit profile in the process. For example, our Patient Bill of Rights guarantees no litigation against patients and no interest or fees. Industry adoption of this practices ensures patients are treated fairly while managing their debts – all in alignment with the CFPB’s goal of compassionate care. Detrick added: "Just as paying rent or car loans helps build credit, paying off medical debt should do the same… I’m hopeful the administration will step back and consider these alternatives – approaches that keep patient dignity front and center while ensuring our healthcare system remains strong."
