#RosenHouseMonday Guests at two Afternoon Teas in the Rosen House this September were invited to a special viewing of a selection of Lucie Rosen's fashionable accessories. After sipping tea in the Music Room near the Oswald Birley portrait of Lucie holding one of her feather fans, visitors met Jessa Krick, Director of Interpretation, Collection and Archives to examine one of her feather fans (and other items) in real life. Lucie's shoes—from one of her costumes—were another hit. "They aren't tiny, like some antique shoes in museums," one visitor noted. "They look like they might fit me..." Watch out for more special viewing opportunities in 2025!

The quiet weeks of late summer are a good time for restoration projects in the Rosen House. Restorer Janine Lambers brought her scaffold and tools to the Lacquer Room for several days in August to re-gild part of the ceiling which had been damaged by a leak several years ago. After carefully preparing the surface over two days, Janine rolled on linseed oil, waited for it to become tacky, and then applied small sheets of gold leaf, each about 3 inches square. With her years of experience, Janine made the alchemy look easy -- as she adhered the fragile gold sheets over her head. She wielded a soft brush and a custom cutting tool mounted to one finger as part of her kit during this process, with only a fleck or two of gold leaf floating to the tarp below The Lacquer Room ceiling is glowing again, and ready for tours this month on select dates.

A recent article in T: The New York Times Style Magazine heralded antique tapestries as making a comeback as stylish wallcoverings, even “showing up in the most modern settings.” All we can say is “That’s so 1500!” Take a look at some of the tapestries that are on display in the Rosen House!

Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL) joined forces with the phenomenal pianist Jeremy Denk on August 4th at Caramoor and treated the audience to Beethoven’s majestic Fourth Piano Concerto, alongside stirring symphonic masterpieces by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Antonin Dvořák. At the helm was Thomas Wilkins, the dynamic Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and Music Director Laureate of the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, who joined James Roe, President & Executive Director of OSL, for a conversation about Wilkins' upbringing and the music on the afternoon's program. What an afternoon at Caramoor!
