Columbus Division of Fire: "In light of EMS Week, we at Columbus Fire wanted to take the opportunity to share the below graphic with each of you in celebration of the outstanding job our Division has done in Cardiac Arrest Survival. The Columbus Division of Fire participates in the CARES Registry (Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival) where our outcomes for non-traumatic cardiac arrest are compared to other participating agencies in the State of Ohio and in the nation. The 2023 comparison data has recently been released and the Columbus Division of Fire exceeded state and national averages for survival in every survival category measured. The data illustrates the importance of quickly calling 911 in the event of a cardiac incident. It also shows how by-stander intervention while awaiting our medic crews can vastly improves the chance of survival for a heart attack victim. Providing bystander CPR and using an AED device in those critical minutes can save a life." https://lnkd.in/eGe2aGn4

Empowering Communities with OHCA Data: Measuring Outcomes, Improving Care, and Saving Lives through CARES Insights.
About us
CARES, the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival, was established by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Emory University to improve survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in the United States. Communities that join CARES commit to entering cardiac arrest data from EMS agencies and hospitals into a national database in order to track their performance confidentially over time and improve the quality of patient care—and ultimately prevent needless deaths. By joining CARES, communities gain more than just access to information that will help them improve performance and save lives. They also contribute to one of the largest EMS registries in the world, and one of the few that also includes patient outcome information from hospitals. Those features enable CARES data to be used to conduct vital research that furthers our knowledge of cardiac arrest treatment and saves countless lives for years to come.

The vast majority of EMS systems (91.9%) provide T-CPR instructions. However, a minority (38.6%) get hands on the chest >75% cases. That’s the difference between compliance and performance! #6min2live #measure #improve #survival Study from Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES). https://lnkd.in/gv8s59fP

One of the most important things you can do during Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month is understand the difference between SCA and a heart attack. Our favorite analogy: a heart attack is like a plumbing issue (a blockage), while SCA is similar to an electrical issue — and that's why the heart stops during SCA. We love this helpful graphic from American College of Cardiology. Bookmark it, print it out, share it with family, friends and neighbors. The better our awareness, the more equipped we are to act! #SCAawarenessmonth #CPRsaveslives #SCAvsHeartAttack #BystanderRescue #Resuscitation

‘Cardiac arrest,’ ‘heart attack,’ and ‘heart failure’ – these terms are often used interchangeably, but they are NOT the same thing. Understanding the differences between them is vital and could save lives. Take the time to learn more and spread awareness. #HeartHealth #CardiacArrest #SCAFoundation https://lnkd.in/g-pFzQ8g

Excited to share for the first time publicly the new Pit Crew CPR graphic created by the Florida EMS Advisory Council Medical Care Committee under the leadership of Dr. Marshall Frank, DO, MPH, FAEMS! This graphic is designed to help Fire and EMS departments organize their cardiac arrest response using best practices. The Pit Crew CPR approach focuses on pre-defined roles and precise on-scene actions to maximize efficiency and effectiveness during resuscitation efforts. A huge thank you to Chief Thomas DiBernardo for his exceptional work on this project and his dedication to assisting Florida implement Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES). His efforts in measuring and improving our cardiac arrest outcomes are making a real difference in the lives of our communities and allowing the State of Florida to rise above the national averages! Let’s continue striving for high-performance excellence and improving survival rates across Florida!

New research reveals race & sex may impact survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Bystanders are less likely to give CPR if the person is Black or female, raising concerns about bias in life-saving responses. Read more here... https://lnkd.in/eWSWJcE3
