International students are stressed out by the post-graduation employment process - and for good reason! Not only must they navigate all of the usual things that U.S. students do (getting an interview, CV/resume, interviewing, job hunting and more job hunting) but they must do so in a sometimes hostile hiring environment where every discussion of visa sponsorship is difficult or even impossible for them to get the interview because companies have a policy of not sponsoring work visas. I try to support and encourage these international students every year by doing presentations on "Life After OPT". I also present each spring to groups of local Employers to debunk some of the myths (it's too expensive and impossible) and attempt to break down some of their resistance to the process (it's not worth it). It is totally worth it if you find the highly skilled employee you need who is willing to stay with your company and work in an area that perhaps is not a big city or offering big city money. Employers ask yourselves - how much does it cost to recruit, train and hire for a position that is difficult to fill, difficult to retain a worker, and then costly to do recruitment all over again? As opposed to an international student and recent grad who has up to 3 years of work eligibility (in the STEM fields) at no cost to the employer? I came across this wonderful article by an international student who became an immigration lawyer. As she says: "When you understand the different types of visas you may be eligible for and what it takes to compile a strong application, some of the anxiety you may be feeling will lift."
