When most people think of heat hazards, they are considering outdoor environments. However, health and safety professionals must also consider and address indoor heat hazards. Recently, the State of California joined Oregon and Minnesota with new employer requirements that address heat illness prevention for indoor workplaces. The latest CA rules trigger when the indoor temperature reaches 82°F for some employers (workers with restrictive garments) and 87°F for most employers. Please read the new rules at https://lnkd.in/gMNSPJUj. If your business has operations in these states, you are required to: 1-Provide sufficient cool, potable water for employees. 2-Maintain cool-down areas accessible to employees and encourage breaks to prevent overheating. 3-Assess workplaces for heat risk and implement controls (engineering, administrative, or personal protective equipment) when necessary. 4-Establish emergency response procedures for heat illness. 5-Train employees on heat illness prevention and response. 6-Develop and maintain a written Heat Illness Prevention Plan. Even if your state does not require these standards, your company should take action to protect your employees from indoor heat hazards. National Safety Month (#NSM) is a great time to remember the importance of being prepared. This week the National Safety Council is focusing on synthetic opioids like fentanyl, which are a major concern for companies across America. The potency of synthetic opioids and their use in counterfeit pills pose a serious overdose risk to millions of workers. Consider these facts (https://lnkd.in/eSqkmMwH): -7 out of every 10 pills seized by DEA contain a lethal dose of fentanyl. -2mg of fentanyl, the amount on the tip of this pencil, can be enough to kill an average American. Organizations can protect their employees by having naloxone (An FDA-approved medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdose) onsite. Naloxone has the power to save a life. Let NSM serve as a reminder to make it available for worksite emergencies. #opioids #workplaceoverdose #naxolone #emergencyprepardness #ASAPcheck #tangandcompany #nationalsafetymonth #WorkplaceSafety
