Delivering person-centered care is a balancing act. You need to honor both a client’s freedom of choice and their need for personal safety. These goals sometimes seem to be at cross purposes. For example, if a client is advised by a speech pathologist to eat pureed food because he has swallowing issues, but he is a foodie who insists on eating solid food, what do you do? What if a client in the early stages of dementia wishes to continue cooking for herself and performing household chores but her children object? These situations raise thorny questions: Who is responsible for the potential risks that may arise from a client’s choices? How do you train staff to feel empowered to enact client choices in the presence of real or perceived risk? How do you honor a client’s wishes when their family opposes those wishes out of concern for their loved one’s safety? We at CareScout are thinking about these issues every day. If you are, too, see Brian Kelley, PT, DPT, MHA's thoughts on how to balance dignity and safety: https://lnkd.in/ezc-8epp And let us know how you’re addressing dignity and risk. We’d love to start a conversation. #PersonCenteredCare #AgingWithDignity #AgingCare

For Guido Cubellis, owner of Always Best Care Senior Services of Sugar Land, Texas, providing person-centered care took on new meaning when his mother became a client. “It was such an eye opener,” says Guido, and “the best experience I’ve ever had running this company.” Guido makes sure that every client receives the same person-centered care his mother received. And over the years, he’s developed a range of strategies to ensure they do: ➡️ implementing multistep processes for client intake and staff training ➡️ honoring a person’s preferences and life story ➡️ enlisting “floater” staff to ensure continuity of care All lead to a better experience for client, family, caregiver, and provider. If you’re a home care provider, we don’t need to tell you that the home care industry has changed A LOT in the past few years. Median home care costs are up 10% over the last two years — not to increase profits, but as a necessary response to changing expectations, staffing needs, and more. Join us for a panel discussion with Samir Shah, CEO, CareScout, LLC; Melissa Reyes, President of the West Division, TheKey; and Asif Iwani, President and CEO Life Foundation Home Care to discuss how long-term care is changing and how home care providers are responding. When even the experts – the ones who work inside the industry for decades – struggle to navigate the system, you know there’s a problem. That’s often the case in long-term care – even the industry experts find it hard to help their loved ones or themselves get the care they need. In a recent long-term care consumer panel sponsored by CareScout, two of the panelists weren’t just consumers – they were industry experts. Discover the obstacles they faced, and how that reinforced for them a need to develop better ways to navigate the long-term care system.
