Where are all the Senior Leadership Jobs?
Where are all the Senior Leadership jobs? If you’re an Accounting or Finance Senior Leader that’s been looking for a position during the summer months, “Where are all the jobs” is a very relevant question. Don’t worry, after 25 years of watching the seasonality of Accounting & Finance hiring cycles, I can attest that it is common for leadership positions to dwindle during the summer months and Thanksgiving/Christmas months. Peak hiring “seasons” for senior leadership positions are typically Mid-March until Memorial Day and again from Mid-September until Mid-November. **exceptions being recession years e.g. 2001, 2002, 2008, 2009 and boom years e.g. 2021, 2022, 2023. The March-May hiring season is spurred by a domino effect. Senior leaders that accept a job offer during the first quarter typically don’t give their current employer notice until their annual bonus has been safely deposited into their bank account. Annual bonuses are typically paid out between the end of February and the middle of March, thus spurring the beginning of the busy season for senior leadership hiring. Newly hired senior leaders give their notice all within a few weeks of each other and then the companies with the vacancies are looking for Senior Leadership talent at the same time. This leadership hiring season tends to last until the beginning of June. When June rolls around and the schools are out of session, summer vacations take hold. A typical interview process for a senior leadership position requires multiple rounds of interviews and that is difficult for companies to juggle in the summer. Between summer travels and temporary staffing shortages for vacationing employees, the C-Suite is often not readily available to conduct interviews. Thus, delaying the hire until the vacations slow – after the schools are back in session. Labor Day Weekend marks the official end of summer vacations and gives way to the second peak hiring season of the year, Mid-September until Mid-November. Companies that don’t fill key Accounting & Finance leadership positions before year end & budget season, risk unreliable financial results and increased employee turnover due to burnout. Hiring Managers also fear if they don’t fill key positions before the end of the year, the PE Firm, Owner, CEO, etc. may assume the role is not truly needed and indefinitely put the leadership position on hold. We see this 2nd hiring season last until the middle of November when vacations start for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The end of the year holidays send the Senior Leadership hiring season into hibernation through first quarter of the following year and the cycle starts over. In summary, don’t worry – the next peak hiring season is just around the corner.
