You might have seen the clip going around of Saoirse Ronan at The Graham Norton Show in which she brought an entire panel to silence in seconds. As the men joked around about what to do in a safety situation, Ronan delivered a simple remark: "That's what girls have to think about all the time." A few days later, Olympian Ilona Maher took to social media to share a recent occasion in which she was unknowingly asked for help. In a recent visit to the salon, staff members kept Maher longer than usual as they worried for their safety. The athlete added she was happy to support the staff, concluding with: "It's dangerous out there." The two stories share a common thread: women do not feel safe. Our research shows this is true for women at the front line across different industries: ➡️ 61% of women in frontline roles experience hostile, sexist behavior at work. ➡️ Women are more likely to experience hostile, sexist behavior when their teammates are mostly or entirely men. ➡️ Women-led teams experience less hostile, sexist behavior. Where do we begin? Awareness is the first step. Listening to women and recognizing the realities, harm, and costs of hostile, sexist behavior is crucial to addressing this issue not only for women, but for everyone.
