From basic needs of food and shelter, to empowerment programs that lead to housing, employment, and more. Professional counseling services help to sort out barriers that can keep people from being their best. Educational programs build client skills to help them thrive in the future. We continue to adapt to the needs in our communities so that we are offering services relevant to clients. At the base of it all, we build all of these services on the basis of Catholic Social Teaching, which is focused on social justice, dignity, and respect.

Catholic Charities’ Refugee Services recently received a generous donation of dozens of winter coats from Once Upon a Child in Urbandale, Iowa. These coats will support our refugee clients as they rebuild and settle into their new community. We thank Once Upon a Child for their generosity and support.

The Catholic Charities’ Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault program, located in Council Bluffs, Iowa, provides services to anyone facing these issues through a 24-hour crisis phone line, emergency shelter, court advocacy and much more! Join us this Wednesday, September 25, for a retirement party in honor of Catholic Charites Executive Director, Barbara Q. Decker. For the last six years, Barbara has led Catholic Charities with dedication and grace. Throughout her time, she has championed program enhancements, including the establishment of the post-resettlement services program for refugee clients, fostered the creation of a new social justice initiative and created innovative solutions to service delivery during the pandemic. Barbara will retire at the end of October 2024. Please join us for the 12:10 p.m. Mass at St. Ambrose Cathedral then at the Catholic Pastoral Center (601 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50309) at 1 p.m. for a reception. All are welcome!
