On Wednesday, September 11, the best masons from across Wisconsin came together at Fond du Lac Stone for the annual SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500® Wisconsin Regional Series! Now in its 22nd season, the competition pits teams of one mason and one mason tender against each other to build the highest and finest 26-foot-long brick wall in just one hour—with as few errors as possible. C.D. SMITH'S STRONG REPRESENTATION 💪 Two journeyman teams from C.D. Smith competed, aiming for the coveted title of "World's Best Bricklayer." Kurt Bartus and his son Ajustis tended for bricklayers Jesse Steger and Eric Digman, pushing their speed and stamina as strong contenders. Known as the "Super Bowl of Masonry," the competition saw Jake Brock and his tender Nick Miller repeat their success, winning the regional series for the second consecutive year and securing a place at the 2025 World Championship in Las Vegas. THE NEXT GENERATION OF MASONS 👷♂️👷♀️ Beyond the fierce competition, the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500® is also about paving the way for the future of masonry. The JR BRICKLAYER 500 contest allowed high school students and apprentices to demonstrate their skills. C.D. Smith's Tom Qualy claimed first place among the apprentices, while Gavin Steger, son of bricklayer Jesse Steger, took second in the high school competition. A local student from Fond du Lac won the abbreviated journeyman competition, showcasing the exciting opportunities available for future masons. HANDS-ON LEARNING: MASONRY EDUCATION DAY 🤓 One of the most exciting aspects of the event was the Masonry Education Day, which ran alongside the competition. Students interested in skilled trades had the opportunity to meet contractors and vendors, and more importantly, they received hands-on training from experienced masons. C.D. Smith team members—Jim Burg, Elijah Waitz, and Tom Qualy—were among those mentoring students, sharing valuable tips and tricks while allowing them to try laying masonry structures. They were joined by other C.D. Smith tradespeople who contributed their expertise, ensuring students had a well-rounded learning experience. BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE 🚀 It was a beautiful day for highlighting the skill of Wisconsin’s top masons and the bright future of the masonry industry. Fathers and sons, like Kurt and Ajustis Bartus, and Jesse and Gavin Steger, exemplified the generational passion and skills passed down through the trades. This event showed the strength of mentorship, the relationships defining masonry, and the exciting opportunities ahead for the next generation. 🎉 Congratulations to all competitors, and a special thank you to everyone who helped make this event successful! . . . . . . #Wisconsin #SMBL500 #Construction #Masonry #MasonryConstruction #Brick #Bricklayer #MasonryStrong #Contractors #SkilledTrades SPEC MIX

💧Securing the future of Waukesha's water supply required innovative solutions and decades of planning. THE BACKSTORY | A City in Crisis Waukesha, a community of 72,000 people, faced a significant challenge with a diminishing and contaminated groundwater supply. After comprehensive studies, Lake Michigan presented a sustainable and cost-effective solution, leading the city to embark on a multi-decade plan to address the issue. CATCH UP QUICK | Preconstruction Planning and Building In 2020, the project officially began with the construction of crucial infrastructure, including a booster pumping station, reservoirs, and a water tower. A pivotal agreement with the City of Milwaukee facilitated water transportation through a newly constructed 36-mile pipeline system. Detailed planning and coordination were essential for project success. C.D. Smith took the lead in concrete self-perform work, executing significant pours and encapsulation techniques to ensure the structural integrity of the booster pumping station and reservoirs. OVERCOMING CHALLENGES | Location and Transformation The journey faced challenges, notably the necessity for a gallon-per-gallon wastewater return. Due to Waukesha's location in the Mississippi watershed basin, special considerations were made. C.D. Smith crews oversaw Waukesha Clean Water Plant upgrades to meet Lake Michigan standards. Situated on an old national defense site, the booster pumping station underwent a transformation guided by C.D. Smith. The experienced team coordinated major earthwork, the construction of the booster pumping station, an elevated water storage tower, and ground storage tanks. PROJECT SUCCESS | A Sustainable Future The neglected site experienced rejuvenation, with grading and restoration paving the way for a future park. The booster pumping station will become a landscaped park featuring grass, evergreens, trees, and walking paths on a 35-acre reserve surrounding the 8.6-million-gallon reservoir tanks. As the project concluded in the fall of 2023, Waukesha residents emerged with a renewed sense of sustainability. The transition to Lake Michigan water brought minimal disruption to water service and secured a sustainable water supply for the city's future. THE BOTTOM LINE | Final Thoughts Waukesha’s transition to Lake Michigan water is a testament to the power of long-term planning, collaboration, and teamwork. We're proud to have played a role in ensuring the sustainability and resilience of this community. 🗨 "Concrete and wastewater treatment is where our history began, and it continues to be an area of excellence for us." – Greg Sabel, Executive VP at C.D. 📣 Neutral and mass timber construction in Madison are making more news. It's an exciting time for sustainable building systems in Wisconsin! #masstimber #construction #sustainablebuilding #MadisonWI #Wisconsin

The developers of Bakers Place are bringing more #masstimberconstruction to Madison, WI with a four-story multi-family project that offers 30 modern downtown apartments. The location provides convenient access to the Capitol, major offices, and universities, while the building features a variety of unit types, including studios and 3-bedrooms, making it ideal for students and professionals. The construction implements a sustainable building system with #masstimber decks, bathroom pods, and other components manufactured off-site. This approach allows for condensing the construction timeline. The project is designed according to Passive House guidelines and will seek certification from the International Living Futures Institute (ILFI). We look forward to watching this project evolve! 📣 On Wednesday, September 4, the School District of Hilbert came together with the community, faculty, and students to celebrate the completion of recent construction projects with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and facility tours. CATCH-UP QUICK | 👷♂️👷♀️ In 2022, Hilbert School District voters approved an $8.27 million referendum to address key areas in STEM, Athletics, and Music. The project aimed to enrich the entire educational experience, focusing on: » STEM Upgrades: Modernization of the wood shop, metals shop, and auto shop with new equipment and finishes. » Space Optimization: Reorganization of spaces to create additional room within existing facilities. » Cafeteria Expansion: Conversion of the old band room into a larger cafeteria. » Music Facilities: Relocation of the band room to a new addition, complete with private, soundproof practice rooms and a new choir room. » Athletics: Establishment of a new weight and fitness area, while the former weight room was repurposed into a corridor connecting the existing building's cafeteria to the new addition. WHY IT MATTERS | 🌟 These enhancements deliver on a vision supported by Hilbert's community, creating a blend of old and new spaces that enrich the student experience and fulfill the capital referendum. WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING | 💬 Jerry Franzcek, Hilbert School District Board President, expressed his gratitude toward the administrative, maintenance, and teaching staff, along with McMahon Engineers/Architects and C.D. Smith Construction. He also extended thanks to the community for their support, sharing his thoughts on the bright future ahead: “We have some wonderful facilities here, and I’m excited to say that while many districts are seeing declining enrollments, we’re staying steady and even trending positively, with enrollment rising by 42 students this year. This growth is due to the Hilbert School District’s commitment to valuing education and providing state-of-the-art facilities.” “A big thank you to the families and constituents of the Hilbert School District. It’s because of your involvement with your children’s education, your support, and your dedication that we are able to attract and retain one of the best teaching staffs around.” 🎉 We're proud to have collaborated with the District and McMAHON as the construction manager and are thrilled to help kick off the 2024-2025 school year in these new spaces.
