We all deserve food that is nutritious, affordable, and safe. It’s a human right. World Food Day is an opportunity to inspire action on the global challenges undermining that right. Climate change drives many of the most pressing challenges to food security. A new policy brief featuring ATAI-funded evaluations highlights promising strategies to build climate resilience for small-scale farmers and increase food security, including: 🌱 Improved seeds and farming techniques can maintain yields during weather shocks. ✅ Cash transfers help farmers avoid cutting consumption or selling assets after weather shocks. 🤝 Combining agricultural technologies with social assistance may be most effective to sustain farmers’ livelihoods. For example, evaluations in Bangladesh, Tanzania, India, and Mozambique demonstrated how flood and drought resilient seed varieties can strengthen farmer resilience in the face of weather shocks. Social assistance tools, such as cash transfers and vocational training, have provided complementary support against impacts of unpredictable weather shocks in Nicaragua, Ethiopia, and Zambia. As climate change intensifies, evidence-based policies can better protect vulnerable farmers — and our food systems. CEGA is glad to see global inequality research recognized by this year’s #NobelPrize in economics – with a particular emphasis on the key role that institutions continue to play in shaping growth and prosperity in countries around the world. Our #EDI portfolio uses RCTs to investigate the role of institutions (and institutional reforms) in development: https://lnkd.in/gMHtZctQ This year’s prize also celebrates work that critically examines the consequences of colonialism. One way CEGA strives to advance equity in global development research is by investing in research led by scholars from low- and middle-income countries. At an event hosted yesterday in collaboration with the Center for Global Development, USAID Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman highlighted new work from the Agency toward maximizing the impact of U.S. foreign assistance on development outcomes. USAID’s release of two new position papers — which outline guiding principles around cost-effectiveness and cash transfers — exemplifies a commitment to improving the generation and use of evidence at the Agency and beyond. Motivated by these shared ambitions, CEGA is thrilled to collaborate with USAID on a new global platform: Promoting Impact and Learning with Cost-Effectiveness Evidence (PILCEE). In addition to increasing the use of cost-effectiveness evidence in USAID’s strategic planning, policymaking, activity design, and implementation, this historic partnership will also generate new cost-effectiveness evidence through high-quality randomized evaluations and meta-analyses. We're proud to help lead the movement accelerating cost-effectiveness research — a crucial tool for identifying and scaling high-impact, evidence-based solutions to pressing global problems.
