We strive to foster a secular society based on reason, science, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values.
About us
The Center for Inquiry strives to foster a secular society based on reason, science, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values. The Center for Inquiry (CFI) is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization dedicated to defending science and critical thinking in examining religion. CFI’s vision is a world in which evidence, science, and compassion—rather than superstition, pseudoscience, or prejudice—guide public policy. To make a better world, we need to use our heads and our hearts. To confront the challenges that face us as a planetary civilization, we need to use the tools of science and reason guided by compassion and respect for the dignity of every individual. To move forward, we need to discard old superstitions, prejudices, and magical thinking and embrace facts, evidence, and critical thinking. It’s about more than whether or not God exists. It’s about more than whether ghosts roam among us, aliens hover above us, or psychics can see within us. The Center for Inquiry (CFI) strives to foster a society free of the dogmatic influence of religion and pseudoscience; a society inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment, the wonders of science, and the limitless potential of human intelligence and creativity; a society in which beliefs are not granted the same rights as people, where the freedom of expression is enjoyed by all, and all ideas are open to the scrutiny of reason. Secular government. Free inquiry. Critical thinking. Humanist values. This is the Center for Inquiry.

In Texas, nonreligious couples seeking a marriage ceremony that reflects their beliefs are still denied equal recognition. We stand up against this discriminatory law that limits marriage officiants to those affiliated with organized religion. Our Secular Celebrants, trained to perform weddings without religious undertones, have the right to solemnize marriages too. With past victories in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Oregon, we're challenging Texas’s restrictive laws. This is a fight for equality — where belief or nonbelief shouldn’t dictate one’s right to celebrate marriage on their terms. From our general counsel Richard Conn: "Human rights are universal and should not be predicated on one’s religious belief or nonbelief. Requiring religious affiliation in order to celebrate a marriage in Texas–and imposing criminal penalties on those who would choose otherwise–turns nonbelievers into second class citizens. We believe this statutory requirement is unconstitutional and must be changed." Progress and conservation, which appear to oppose each other, are in fact necessary to explore the multitude of things in their unity. One without the other is meaningless and insufficient to describe nature in its entirety. The synthesis between the two may be impossible, and perhaps it should remain so, but it must exist as an ideal or rather as a quest. There are no progressives on one side and conservatives on the other because we all embody a bit of both. What distinguishes between two schools of thought (for example, idealism and realism) or two metaphysical approaches to the world is the subtle connection between several complementary aspects of the same reality, which forms a profound worldview. The way we employ this complementarity may truly define a school of thought, rather than the predominant direction of the thought itself. In other words, our manner of nuanced thinking defines our thought. Why do so many people believe they've seen ghosts? 👻 In a recent article by the Greek Reporter, Skeptical Inquirer editor Stephen Hupp sheds light on pareidolia—the brain's tendency to spot familiar patterns, like faces, where none exist. Ever looked at a cloud and seen a face? Similarly, shadows in a dark room can appear ghostly, tricking us into seeing what isn’t really there. Christopher Hitchens believed in the power of balancing admiration and criticism—a skill he called ‘keeping two sets of books.’ He saw value in challenging groupthink, resisting tribalism, and defending free speech across the board. Today, as polarizing ideologies push for a ‘buy one, buy all’ approach to belief systems, Hitchens' views remain profoundly relevant. Discover his unapologetic stance on free expression, antiauthoritarianism, and the complexities of intellectual independence in Skeptical Inquirer: https://ow.ly/n6VZ50TXneV #FreeSpeech #CriticalThinking #Authoritarianism #ThoughtLeadership #ChristopherHitchens
