Last week, CSPI's Olivia Peña attended the 2024 Come to the Table Conference, hosted by Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI). Held in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, the theme of the conference was Food, Land, and Sacred Stories. The keynote speaker was Dr. Gail Myers, where she presented on the importance of storytelling for collective healing. During her keynote, she shared this powerful quote: "We speak our power in telling our story." She also presented her incredible film Rhythms of the Land, which highlighted the stories of Black farmers in the South. We also ran into Tambra Raye Stevenson of WANDA: Women Advancing Nutrition Dietetics & Agriculture which is based in DC 🥰 Bonus pic: we met up with CSPI's Vice President of Programs Anupama Joshi after the conference for a tasty dinner!

Join us on Thursday, October 17th at 3pm ET for a presentation led by Samantha Sundermeir, PhD, RDN, a Registered Dietitian who recently completed her PhD in Human Nutrition at The Johns Hopkins University and a current Postdoctoral Fellow at Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. Dollar stores have garnered increased attention from community members and policy makers across the country in recent years due to their high density in low socio-economic status communities and associated public health concerns. In the last five years, many municipalities have passed policies that aim to curb dollar store proliferation and improve their food offerings. Importantly, most of those policies were enacted as a result of community organizing and advocacy for policy action. These events have piqued the interest of researchers and local governments who want to understand how community members utilize dollar stores to meet their needs with the ultimate goal of developing policies that are effective and equitable. This webinar will cover how researchers and policy makers are working together on this issue, as well as provide updates on current research activities and recent local policy action.

CSPI has been hosting two fantastic interns for the fall term and we'd like to introduce them today! Nikki Nadeau is a Sustainability Labeling Intern, working across the Food & Environment and Food Labeling issue areas at CSPI. She is excited to learn about eco-labeling in the food industry and to help inform CSPI’s position on this topic. In addition to her internship, Nikki is pursuing a Ph.D. in Environment and Natural Resources at The Ohio State University, focusing on the role of coalitions in sustainable food system transformation. In the future, she aims to continue working in policy advocacy to promote more socially and environmentally sustainable food systems. Anna Soloniuk is the Healthy Food Access intern working on CSPI's efforts around SNAP, GusNIP, the Farm Bill, and healthier food banking. Anna is currently at New York University pursuing her Masters in Food Systems. After this internship she is excited to graduate in the spring after completing her capstone research project and continue her work in food policy to support an equitable, sustainable, and nutritious food environment for all. #intern #internship #publichealth #nonprofit

Why are some ingredients banned in Europe but still used in the U.S.? Thomas Galligan, Ph.D., CSPI's Principal Scientist for Food Additives & Supplements, spoke with The National Desk on the concerns about lax regulations on food chemicals in the United States and what we need to be doing differently. "The clearest example of FDA failure is the food dye Red 3." Watch the full video 👇

Did you know that nearly one in five U.S. consumers buys groceries online at least once per month? Or that two-thirds of restaurant sales are generated by orders placed online or by phone? CSPI recently had a perspective article accepted by the journal Frontiers, examining how the internet is drastically changing the way U.S. consumers shop for groceries, order food from restaurants, and interact with food marketing. This article was written by CSPI coauthors Eva Greenthal, Katie Marx, Emily Friedman, Sara John, Joelle Johnson, MPH, Christina LiPuma, MPH, RDN, CDCES, DeAnna Nara PhD, MSc, LDN, CNS, Sarah Sorscher, Karen Gardner, and Aviva Musicus.

Proposed language in the House Farm Bill would explicitly introduce political interests to and harm the integrity of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans—the foundation of school meal programs, SNAP, WIC, and other necessary nutrition programs for American families—write former Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee members Mary Story, PhD, RD, and Eric Rimm, ScD.

“Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food” won an Emmy last week in the Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary category! "Poisoned" premiered on Netflix last year and shined a harsh light on the American food system, often touted as the “safest food in the world.” The documentary featured CSPI's very own Sarah Sorscher, as well as other big names in the fight for a healthier food system, such as food safety lawyer Bill Marler of Food Safety News.
