Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in Franklin County. In 2018, the Franklin County rate of prostate cancer deaths was nearly three times higher than the national rate. Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is a great reminder for all men to get screened, as detecting cancer early can save lives. Fact: In the first half of 2024, 15 infants died in Franklin County due to a sleep-related condition. That’s 26% of all deaths among Franklin County children younger than 1 year old. Our hospitals are working to reduce the infant mortality rate, in part, by showing all parents who delivered a baby in one of Franklin County’s nine birthing hospitals an educational, safe-sleep video prior to being discharged from the hospital. In the first 6 months of 2024, 88% of parents who delivered a baby in a Franklin County birthing hospital reported viewing the video before discharge. Our goal is 100%. This week, a safe-sleep new video went live across our birthing hospitals. This new-and-improved, updated video highlights the elements of a safe home sleep environment for newborns, how to practice the ABCs of safe sleep—every nap, every night, every time—the importance of not smoking in the house, and tips for keeping yourself alert and awake while caring for your baby. Self-Care Awareness Month is a great opportunity to care for your physical and mental health. However, it’s important to recognize that self-care can be practiced year-round. Self-care can include eating nutritious meals, practicing gratitude, prioritizing sleep, spending time in nature, and connecting with others. Consider if some of these activities might improve your overall health. #CentralOhioHospitalCouncil #COHC #BetterTogether #SelfCare #HealthAndWellness #InternationalSelfCareDay #SelfCareAwarenessMonth #MentalHealthMatters #TakeCareOfYourself #HealthAndWellness #PhysicalHealth #MentalHealth #EmotionalHealth

National Recovery Month started in 1989, and is a national observance held every September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation’s recovery community, and the dedication of service providers who make recovery possible. During #RecoveryMonth, it's also a good time to make sure you, friends and family have the support needed when working towards recovery. 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides free and confidential emotional support to people in distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the United States. To utilize this resource, call or text 988 or use the chat feature at 988lifeline.org #CentralOhioHospitalCouncil #COHC #BetterTogether #NationalRecoveryMonth #RecoveryMonth #RecoveryIsPossible #RecoveryJourney #988Lifeline #MentalHealthAwareness #BehavioralHealth #NationalSuicideAwarenessMonth

Today marks the inaugural 988 Day, an annual event dedicated to spreading awareness of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and emphasizing the importance of mental health support and suicide prevention. In June, Franklin County residents placed, on average, 295 calls per day to 988 and other local crisis hotlines. That’s up from 200 calls per day in early 2023. The 988 Lifeline is a direct connection to immediate and free support and resources for anyone in crisis. And it works. About 98 percent of people nationally who call, chat, or text the 988 Lifeline get the crisis support they need and do not require additional services in that moment. If you or someone in your life needs help, confidential support and treatment options are available. Call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org. #CentralOhioHospitalCouncil #COHC #BetterTogether #988Day #988Lifeline #SuicidePrevention #EndTheStigma #YouAreNotAlone #BeThe1To #SuicidePreventionMonth #HelpIsHere #YouMatter #MentalHealthMatters

Congratulations to the Healthcare Career Collaborative of Central Ohio (HCCOCO) for receiving top honors in workforce excellence at the Ohio Economic Development Association Annual Summit. With funds from the five HCCOCO partners (Mount Carmel Health System, Nationwide Children's Hospital, OhioHealth, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and PrimaryOne Health) and a matching grant from the State of Ohio, HCCOCO hosted our first large-scale hands-on career awareness event for high school and vocational school students in March. It was a huge success, with more than 1,100 participants from across Ohio. These students experienced hands-on activities such as performing virtual reality surgery, cauterizing orange rinds and inflating animal lungs. They talked to registered nurses, respiratory therapists, surgical technologists, radiologic technologists and medical assistants in health care today, as well as representatives from schools and training programs where they can learn those skills. We look forward to hosting the event again in the Winter of 2025. #CentralOhioHospitalCouncil #COHC #BetterTogether #WorkforceDevelopment #HealthcareCareerCollaborativeOfCentralOhio #HealthcareEducation #HealthcareCareerResources

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, a campaign that raises awareness of overdose—one of the world’s worst public health crises—and stimulates action and discussion about evidence-based overdose prevention and drug policy. The campaign also acknowledges the profound grief felt by families and friends whose loved ones have died or suffered permanent injury from a drug overdose and spreads the message about the tragedy of drug overdose death and that drug overdose is preventable. According to the Columbus and Franklin County Addiction Plan: ⬩Overdose deaths in Franklin County decreased 8.2% in 2023 but remain much higher than before the COVID-19 pandemic ⬩85% of overdose deaths were due to Opiates and Fentanyl. Heroin remained absent ⬩73% of Franklin County overdose deaths were men ⬩White people remain more likely to die of an overdose than people of color (61% to 39%), but that's slowly starting to change ⬩Almost half the 696 people who died of an overdose in 2023 in Franklin County were age 35 to 54 To learn about the work of central Ohio hospitals to combat the overdose crisis, visit https://loom.ly/EHEIAeU. Labor Day is a time to celebrate the hard work of Americans everywhere—but it’s also a time to stay safe. In Franklin County, the number of deaths caused by impaired driving nearly doubled over a three-year period. If you’ve been drinking, plan ahead—use a taxi, rideshare, or call a sober friend. #CentralOhioHospitalCouncil #COHC #BetterTogether #PreventImpairedDriving #SoberDriver #CelebrateResponsibly #LaborDay #DriveSober #DriveSoberOrGetPulledOver #RideSober #RideSoberOrGetPulledOver #ResponsibleDriving #LaborDayWeekend

On this day in 1920, the 19th Amendment was certified, granting women the right to vote across the nation—a milestone in the journey toward equality. Today, as we observe Women’s Equality Day, COHC honors the achievements of women’s rights activists whose relentless efforts paved the way for future generations. We also celebrate the ongoing work of those who continue to champion gender equality. In alignment with this commitment, central Ohio hospitals are actively working to enhance support for women- and minority-owned businesses. By implementing a range of targeted initiatives, we aim to help these businesses better understand the unique needs of each hospital system and navigate the complexities of the hospital contracting process.
