About us
The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been dedicated to ending hunger for more than 30 years. The Food Bank started as a one-day demonstration project on World Food Day in 1981, and to address the needs of hungry families, began permanent operation on October 16, 1982. Originally, the Food Bank was located in a converted movie theater in Steelton. The Food Bank initiated a capital campaign, raising 1.5 million dollars directed to the construction of a brand new warehouse. Then, in 1994, the Food Bank relocated to its current facility in Harrisburg. Mission: Fighting hunger, improving lives, strengthening communities. At the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, we live our mission every day. It is our passion. We truly believe no one should be hungry and we are committed to working harder every day to make that belief a reality. We trust that the healthy food we distribute is an investment in our community, providing hope for families who are trying to build a brighter future and otherwise would lack fuel to succeed. What We Do: Serving 27 counties, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the largest nonprofit food distribution organization in central PA. The Food Bank solicits, inventories and distributes food and other donated products to more than 1000 partner agencies (food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, etc.) directly serving our neighbors in need. The Food Bank distributed more than 50 million nutritious meals through our partner networks over the past year. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is part of the Feeding America and Feeding Pennsylvania network of food banks.

Central Pennsylvania Food Bank partner, St. John's Episcopal Food Pantry, located in Lancaster City, serves approximately 60 families a week through their client choice pantry. "This is so much more than food," states volunteer, Liz West. Twice a week, St. John's Episcopal Pantry opens their doors to neighbors facing food insecurity, providing them with dignity and respect. This group of volunteers embodies a deep passion and commitment to serving their community so no one "falls through the cracks," as Marion Wear, volunteer, says. #nonprofit #centralpafb #foodbank

A Pack-A-Thon is a special event hosted by the Food Bank where hundreds of volunteers come together in the span of just hours to make a huge impact for our neighbors facing hunger. Over a course of three shifts, volunteers will work in unison to pack boxes of nutritious food for distribution to families, veterans, seniors, and many others. Each July, Chick-fil-A on Lindle Road in Harrisburg holds a “Gallons for Good” campaign where they donate $1 for every gallon of iced tea and lemonade that are sold throughout the month to a local business. This year, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank was at the top of their list! They sold 369 gallons of iced tea/lemonade in just 31 days. This equates to 1,476 meals that can be served to our neighbors facing food insecurity! We are beyond thankful for their support and partnership. #foodbank #centralpafb #nonprofit
