This year's #GlobalDPISummit brought together over 700 innovators from 101 countries, signaling a profound shift towards harnessing #DigitalPublicInfrastructure for societal transformation. In his keynote, Pramod Varma, Co-Chair at the Centre for Digital Public Infrastructure - CDPI, shared that initiatives like the #Finternet outlines a future where universal digital credentials such as educational or vaccination records could be tamper-proof and system-agnostic, making cross-border data sharing as seamless as the internet. The summit made it clear that DPI has evolved from a few foundational systems to a sophisticated “DPI approach,” leveraging open protocols to foster interoperability and cross-border collaboration. This policy brief sheds light on the potential of #DigitalPublicInfrastructure to transform multilateral responses by enabling effective coordination, particularly when serving crisis-affected populations, migrants, and the displaced. The DPI approach, endorsed by the G20 2023 presidency, offers a pathway to unify fragmented digital systems and increase interoperability among aid organisations, governments, and NGOs. This policy brief reveals how groups like the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) and the DIGID Consortium are paving the way for initiatives like person-centric ‘data portability’ and interoperability protocols to unlock digital assets and bolster data-sharing across the sector. This publication shines a light on how DPI is creating pathways to inclusion, economic empowerment, and public service access worldwide and how various case studies highlight that DPI is not just a technical approach but a people-centred philosophy, enabling millions globally, especially the underserved, to participate in their digital economies.
