🌟 Happy Tica Tuesday! 🌟 Today’s spotlight is on the incredible Giovanna Carriero-Contreras, a powerhouse in the interpreting and translation industry with over 30 years of experience. I first learned about Giovanna in 2017, when I became a licensed interpreter trainer through Cross-Cultural Communications, LLC. She had co-authored some of the very textbooks I used in my training, such as "The Community Interpreter" and "The Medical Interpreter." It was immediately clear that Giovanna’s contributions to the field are immense. As the founder and visionary of Cesco Linguistic Services, Giovanna’s exceptional leadership has helped shape the language services industry. She’s also a founding member and Chair-Elect of the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE). Her passion for interpreter training and her commitment to promoting language access are what truly set her apart. When I met Giovanna in person at the American Translators Association conference in Miami, I was thrilled to be paired with her during a session exercise on creating rubrics. Her expertise and ability to break down complex concepts into clear, effective tools left a lasting impression on me—a skill I’m still working to master myself! Beyond her work at Cesco, Giovanna is deeply involved in shaping industry standards. She serves on the ASTM International Committee F43 and as Chief of the US Delegation for ISO/TC 37/SC 5, working on translation and interpreting technology standards. Giovanna’s influence extends to many roles in advocacy and standards development, including serving on committees for ALC and ATA. Her groundbreaking work includes co-authoring the AAITE National Codes of Ethics and editing the ISO standard on Community Interpreting. Giovanna’s ethical leadership has not gone unnoticed—she was named the 2020 Bill Daniels Ethical Leader of the Year. Her commitment to empowering interpreters and ensuring language access is nothing short of inspiring.
