In our next installment of Ascen's Staffing Industry Spotlight, our colleague Mickey Pelletier sat down with Mike Wiley, CEO of Chane Solutions. Mike's company is well-respected in the background check industry for their speed, responsiveness, and generally high-touch service. We first heard about Chane from a customer who suggested using them to get some complicated background checks done quickly. Mike has a wealth of knowledge about the background check industry, and this shines through in the interview. Here are some of the big insights that stuck out to me: 1. Background screening is not as simple as it seems Many believe background checks are straightforward, quick, and uniform, but Wiley reveals that the process is layered with complexity. Different municipalities and states have varying, often contradictory regulations, which require constant monitoring and updating of compliance practices to avoid significant legal risks. This constant change challenges the idea that background checks are a simple, standardized part of hiring. 2. Responsiveness is more critical than turnaround time While speed in processing background checks is important, Wiley argues that the real differentiator in the background screening industry is responsiveness. Staffing agencies and employers need real-time answers and guidance, especially when facing pressure from candidates or clients. The ability to quickly respond and navigate the complex rules around screening is often more valuable than the actual speed of the check itself. 3. The shift away from credit reports in screening Contrary to common belief that credit checks are essential for assessing candidates' reliability, Wiley explains that this practice is becoming outdated and even legally risky. He highlights a shift away from credit reports because of the potential for litigation, noting that a bad credit score doesn't necessarily reflect a candidate's employability.
