She’s one of the many female deputies we have that we would like to recognize on this day who protect and serve throughout the county. In this episode, Valerio encounters an injured man during a traffic stop on Ashley Phosphate Road. Valerio has been with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office for two years and has an extensive career in law enforcement which includes duties in North Carolina, Clarendon County, and Venezuela where she served as a police officer for several years. • AWARD WINNER: On Jan. 28, Master Deputy Kevin Willis assisted the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and spent about 13 hours tracking and trailing through swamp and woods to locate a suspect who had fired a gun at deputies. Using his K-9 partner, Rex, and his experience as a handler, he helped facilitate the capture of the suspect. Willis’s quick thinking and the deployment of Rex provided critical seconds for the suspect and firearm to be secured and detained. It is without question that his actions prevented an officer-involved shooting. Then on Feb. 9, Willis responded to Mauss Hill Road to assist the U.S. Marshal Service in locating a suspect wanted for criminal sexual conduct in the first degree. Due to his training and his trust in Rex, Willis advised those on scene that the suspect was in the attic or the air vents. After an extensive search, the suspect could not be located, but he was persistent in where he believed the suspect to be. The suspect was so well concealed that the wall had to be destroyed to remove him. Had Willis not shown steadfast determination, this violent predator would not have been apprehended. Both of these incidents occurred when Willis was on leave, giving up his valuable time with family to serve the community. Willis was presented with the Deputy of the Quarter award for the first quarter of 2024. CONGRATULATIONS! Join him in “Service Beyond the Call.” We’re hiring deputy and detention deputy positions.
