We’re excited to feature our very own Brandon Nichols as he takes us through his POV as the leader of our pyrolysis team on-site in the Inyo National Forest!

Charm’s mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂ profitably.
About us
Charm Industrial is working to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We design, build and operate a fleet of mobile fast pyrolyzers that convert ag and forest biomass residues into bio-oil for use in carbon removal and direct-reduced-iron steelmaking. In 2020 our Chief Scientist and co-founder Shaun Meehan had two breakthroughs (bio-oil intermediate and bio-oil sequestration) that kickstarted the company. Within 10 months we completed our first carbon removal injection and in 2021 we completed more than 5,000 tons of CO₂e removal for customers like Stripe, Shopify and Microsoft.

🌳538 acres of improved forest resilience in the Inyo National Forest. 🪵60 tons of small diameter logs with no feasible market or use. 👷🏽7 Charmers operating 24/7 for 18 days to convert these logs into a carbon-rich bio-oil. 👏1 massive proof point in how permanent carbon removals can unlock more wildfire mitigation projects, reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire, and avoid smoke that hurts local air quality - all while removing emissions from the atmosphere. Huge thanks to our partners National Forest Foundation and the USDA Forest Service Service who helped us make this deployment a reality. 🌳~340,000 National Malls worth of federal lands (50 million acres) are still in need of wildfire risk reduction treatment and we’re excited to support these efforts further. Welcome to the team, Kevin! 🚀
So excited to share my next adventure leading Product & MRV at Charm Industrial I remember when Peter Reinhardt took me on a factory tour in the early days of Charm, I thought he’d lost his mind. We were staring at these pyrolyzers next to these huge bales of corn stover and he was telling me about the problem of the rocks 🪨 getting stuck in the conveyor in Kansas which was causing the machine to jam. "Seems hard" I thought. But then I read Speed & Scale...the 2019 IPCC report...experienced the worsening "wildfire days" locked indoors...had two amazing kids who are growing up on this planet...built CDR.fyi with some amazing internet friends...and learned that the path to net zero & a sustainable economy now *requires* carbon removal And – unfortunately for 🌍 – no one is removing carbon at scale just yet Fast forward to today and Charm’s operating across the US, removing thousands of tonnes of CO2 per year from the atmosphere. The plan from here? Scale Charm by a factor of ~10000x, faster than almost any other technology in human history, while creating new clean jobs across the US, mitigating catastrophic wildfires and plugging some of the millions of abandoned oil wells across the country 😅 The scale of the ambition is only matched by the thoughtfulness of the Charm team. I’m so grateful to be able to work alongside some of the most brilliant technical minds (Grace Connors Brian Jamieson Jacob Ferrall-Wolf Saumya Jain) combined with most fearless ops (Katie Flannery Holligan Dillon Card Robert Bronson Marie Antoinette Matschuck), GTM (Sebastian Smith & Harris Cohn), policy & community builders (Nora Cohen Brown & Alison Kelman) and finance & carbon experts (Tim Thomson Max Lavine Thomas Leese). Total dream team. Thanks to the many friends & climate advisors who’ve helped me get here: Alexander Rink, Robert Höglund, Kohzy Koh, Christopher Nixon, Calvin French-Owen, Ilya Volodarsky, Lauren Reeder, Jeff Eiden, Filippo Varini, Tank Chen, Ryan Orbuch, Kim-Mai Cutler, Peter Minor, Joanna Klitzke, Claire G. Kiely, Quentin Servais Laval, TITO JANKOWSKI - AIRMINER, Dominic Lüdin, Peter Olivier, Sebastian Manhart, Eamon Jubbawy and so many more 🙏 Gigatons or Bust! 🚀 https://lnkd.in/g6_k468U
