Just a few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of celebrating our annual "Connecting Philanthropy and Community" event. The purpose of this evening was to honor and celebrate some of our dynamic partners in this important work. It was an inspiring night, highlighted by a powerful keynote from Dr. Yanique Redwood, PhD. Her message of solidarity resonated deeply, providing exactly what we needed as we continue strengthening relationships across our community. This year, we proudly recognized two remarkable leaders for their impactful contributions. Hilary Ward, Director of Global Philanthropy at McDonald’s, was honored as an Advocate for Equity, and Cecile De Mello, Executive Director of Teamwork Englewood, was celebrated as our Champion of Social Justice. CAAIP is proud to honor these powerful women who drive meaningful impact every day in their respective roles. Congratulations, Hilary and Cecille—we look forward to witnessing your continued success! There is no better way to kick off Black Philanthropy Month than by highlighting one of CAAIP's cofounders, the incomparable Ms. Deborah Harrington. Last year, during The Soul of Philanthropy, Ms. Harrington was one of ten honorees celebrated during the exhibit. Deborah has been an advisor to Women of Color Leadership, Chicago Women in Philanthropy, Willie’s Warriors – Chicago Foundation of Women, and the African American Legacy Fund at the Chicago Community Trust. Indeed, this very exhibition can be seen as one of her significant achievements as she co-founded its sponsor, Chicago African Americans in Philanthropy, with colleague Timothy Russell in 1998. Deborah Harrington’s exemplary leadership, tenacity and resolve is the gift that keeps on giving, and we are grateful for all she does to help create a just and equitable society for us all. The Soul of Philanthropy – Rooted in Chicago tells the story of philanthropy from a uniquely Chicago perspective and considers Black philanthropic giving and how it has evolved throughout generations. The Soul of Philanthropy – Rooted in Chicago aims to empower a new generation to recognize their influence and their responsibility to give back. Celebrating Black and Brown Solidarity in Philanthropy We're thrilled to share our recent contribution to Hispanics in Philanthropy, where our intern President, Norman Clark, played a pivotal role in an inspiring event! It was a privilege to witness such a beautiful display of unity and purpose within the Chicago philanthropic community. The event was enriched by a calming meditation session led by Pilar Audain and an uplifting musical performance by The Yohan. Their talents not only set a wonderful tone but also underscored the importance of mental well-being and the power of cultural expression. Together, we are stronger. This event highlighted the incredible synergy between Black and Brown communities, working hand-in-hand to make a positive impact. Let's continue to foster these connections and build a more inclusive and supportive philanthropic landscape. Thank you to everyone who participated and made this event memorable. A couple of Saturdays ago, CAAIP, in collaboration with Mr. Patrick Woodtor founder of Africa International House,(www.aihusa.org ),and Ms. Zakiya Williams from the Institute for Positive Education, (www.ipeclc.org) unveiled the stunning "Give Back Quilt." This beautiful creation, crafted by the Chicago community and the talented Chicago Needles & Threads Quilters Guild, was a highlight of the Soul of Philanthropy Exhibition. In 2023, at the Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago African Americans in Philanthropy (CAAIP) presented The Soul of Philanthropy exhibit, a showcase celebrating the stories of generosity among Americans of African descent. These centuries-old cultural customs and beliefs about giving, often overlooked as philanthropy, have been a transformative force within American society and communities. As part of this inspiring exhibition, community members from Chicago contributed patches to the quilt, each one reflecting their philanthropic passion and reasons for giving. CAAIP, extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. carol adams, who curated the local component, and to the Needles and Thread Quilting Guild for expertly piecing the quilt together. The "Give Back Quilt" will be on display at Africa International House until July 6th, 2024. Don't miss the chance to see this remarkable piece of community art!
