ICYMI: Late last week, Crain's Chicago Business broke the news that the University of Illinois will no longer build its Discovery Partners Institute (DPI) facility at The 78 megadevelopment just outside the Loop. Instead, U of I plans to relocate the DPI to the former U.S. Steel site on the south lakefront. The reasoning includes a chance to marry the DPI’s tech-based R&D and workforce development mission with a cutting-edge quantum computing campus that the university is spearheading. So much time and energy went into the design intelligence behind such a specialized building, led by talented firms OMA and KOO LLC. We hope some of that thinking carries over to the new location. Meanwhile, the search goes on for alternative anchors for The 78, including potentially a new baseball stadium, soccer stadium, or both! The CAC will continue to advocate for the best possible uses and people-centered design. https://lnkd.in/gqTnWqf8 📸 : Discovery Partners Institute (DPI), Renderings: OMA and bloomimages.de. #MegaDevelopment #DPI #The78 #SouthWorks Related Midwest

It was a fun-filled weekend, for sure! Did you catch the amazing Architect's Guild headdresses at the 10th annual Arts in the Dark parade? #OHC2024 #ArtsInTheDark
What an amazing architecture weekend in Chicago! I had the honor of being one of 49 participants in the Architect’s Guild of the Arts in the Dark parade! We all made headdresses inspired by beloved spaces in the city. And speaking of beloved, this was also my favorite weekend of the year, Chicago Architecture Center‘s Open House Chicago. This year my standouts were the Astor Club and the new Field Notes facility. #ohc2024 #architectsguild #artsinthedark

Born in Columbus, OH, in 1950, trailblazing architect and mentor Curtis J. Moody co-founded Moody Nolan in 1982, which would grow to become the largest African-American-owned architecture firm in the country with offices in a dozen cities. Moody Nolan set a new standard for diversity in architecture, and focused on designing attractive civic, educational, sports, and medical buildings in underrepresented communities. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) named them Firm of the Year in 2021. The firm's notable Chicago projects include South Loop's Wintrust Arena, the Englewood STEM High School, and the new City Colleges of Chicago-Malcolm X College on the Near West Side. We are saddened to hear of Moody's passing today; his legacy lives on in the firm's impactful work and through the steady gains of minorities in the field.
