Well done, Dr. Nathaniel Beers! Another accomplishment from #AAP2024.
So honored to have received the Milton JE Senn Award from the Council of School Health American Academy of Pediatrics recognizing me for work in partnership with schools. As pediatricians, there is so much we can do with schools to support the healthy growth and development of children and adolescents. I have had the unique opportunity to shape policy and practice for children and adolescents in schools District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), DC Department of Health, and Children's National Hospital. I have also had to partner with amazing organizations and individuals such as Maya Martin Cadogan, Special Olympics, Team IMPACT, Inc., Josephine Bias Robinson and so many others who have taught me so much about working with schools and families. I have also been able to lead an amazing team Children's National Hospital for the last several years including some presenting this weekend Dr Jaytoya Manget, Dr Sarah Durrin, and Dr Danielle Dooley, and so many others leading in this field. #AAPNCE2024

We are dedicated to advancing care for children with sickle cell disease. One of the effective treatment options we provide is blood and marrow transplant (BMT), which can significantly enhance health and quality of life. To support healthcare professionals and families in understanding this critical treatment, we’ve created an informative video that details the BMT process and its benefits for pediatric patients: #sickcellawareness

New research reveals third of teens and young adults in the U.S. struggle with “period poverty,” or the inability to afford or access menstrual products. Our team surveyed nearly two thousand young people and found that 32.9% experienced period poverty, higher than previous reports. Dr. Monika Goyal, co-director of the Center for Translational Research at Children’s National, stated, “This is reflective of a larger issue with respect to access. This is about having difficulty affording menstrual health products.” Read more in this NBC news feature. http://spr.ly/6043o2QGZ

We’re grateful to our community partners for making yesterday’s Clean Energy Week event a success. Together, we’re advancing clean energy initiatives that benefit the health of children, families, and the environment. At Children’s National, our IMPACT DC team is doing incredible work around healthy housing, and our Sustainability Council is actively reducing our carbon footprint, enhancing energy efficiency, and promoting sustainable practices across our facilities. These efforts are key to building a cleaner, healthier future for all.
What a way to celebrate #NationalCleanEnergyWeek! The DC Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) and Children's National Hospital hosted a great event at the Children's National Research and Innovation Campus. We not only heard from IMPACT DC about childhood health data, but the National Housing Trust and Children's Law Center also shared their efforts to better childhood health through sustainable and healthy housing alongside their plans for the EPA Community Change Grant to upgrade affordable housing stock in DC. The DCSEU with the DC Green Bank, New Columbia Solar, and Flywheel Development LLC spoke about our work in #SolarforAll to bring the benefits of solar to income-qualified DC residents saving them up to $500 of their electricity bill. Did I forget to mention that we got to hear directly from Ward 4 resident participating in Solar for All and that the old Walter Reed Campus hosts two community solar sites saving 460 DC households on their electricity bills combined?
