Get your capes out, Atlanta! It's Cape Day. 🦸 Today, we are celebrating the hidden heroes all around us: the friend in remission, the sibling recovering from surgery, the parent coordinating their child’s appointment schedule. Superheroes may come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing is the same: They all deserve to be celebrated. Show us your capes by tagging us in your photos using #CapeDayATL and tell us who your hidden hero is in the comments below.

A lifelong dancer, Emily was devastated when hip pain suddenly sidelined her from the sport she loves. Dr. Tim Schrader, Medical Director of our hip program, diagnosed her with hip dysplasia. Emily's case is not unusual: Though babies are screened for the condition at birth, mild cases often go undiagnosed until teenage years. After a successful six-hour surgery, she’s now recovering and gearing up to grace the stage once again.

At just 11-years-old, a typical cold turned Kayden’s life upside down. After battling a common cold that quickly escalated to pneumonia and then lead to a stroke, Kayden was diagnosed with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), a rare autoimmune disorder. Despite his diagnosis, Kayden’s spirit and determination shines through. During rehab, he tried to help around the hospital, even asking staff if he could cook in the kitchen—a passion he had long before his hospital stay. In a heartwarming twist, the hospital kitchen staff transformed a conference room into a kitchen just for Kayden, allowing him to pursue his passion while recovering.

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a pediatric physical therapist? Follow along as we show you a day in the life of Julie, who works as a physical therapist in our NICU. Julie is a certified neonatal therapist who is specially trained to care for our smallest and most vulnerable patients, some born as early as 22 weeks gestation. Throughout her shift, Julie provides therapeutic interventions to help babies feel calm and interact with their environment. She also works closely with parents and caregivers in the NICU. After working as a physical therapist at our Egleston Hospital for more than six years, Julie is excited to continue her work at our new Arthur M. Blank Hospital.
