Investing in Teachers, Improving Early Literacy

About us

CLI's mission is closing the gap in reading achievement between children in poverty and their middle-class counterparts. Effective literacy instruction combined with great children's books is the heart and soul of CLI's programs. The majority of children in the classrooms we serve are from economically disadvantaged families with little or no access to books. When we furnish classroom collections (up to 200 children's books) and assist pre-K through 3rd grade teachers in literacy instruction, we work to give these children an essential tool for academic success and an opportunity to develop a life-long love of reading. Headquartered in Philadelphia since our founding in 1988, CLI has been funded by government and private grants as well as many generous individuals. Our clients have included the school districts of Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Newark, and Philadelphia.

  • With only 32% of fourth graders meeting or exceeding NAEP proficiency in 2022, literacy achievement outcomes have remained relatively unchanged for the last few years. For marginalized students, the situation is more dire: only 17% of Black students and 21% of Hispanic/Latinx students scored at or above proficiency. While numerous education reforms and investments have been implemented—including common standards and tied funding— there has been little progress. Schools in Black and Latinx communities often face closures, inadequate funding, high teacher turnover, and lower-quality resources, which undermine educational success and erode trust in schools. So how exactly do you change these outcomes? Download your free copy of "Equity and the Science of Reading" to see what our experts have to say https://bit.ly/3ZluiCG.

  • 🤔 How do equity and the science of reading work together? As school doors open across the country, and children and educators alike return, there's been quite the buzz around the science of reading. Where is the overlap between equity and the science of reading? While understanding this science helps educators implement teaching strategies that enhance reading skills from an early age, CLI is compelled to put our critical lens to the discourse around the science of reading. We know that learning to read is a complex process and requires a multifaceted approach, so how can educators bridge that gap for children? Learn all about it in our latest white paper! 📑 Our experts provide a deep dive into the topic in "Equity and the Science of Reading". Download your own copy at https://hubs.la/Q02NdZ9b0
