Finally, a way to measure pain. For children and others who struggle to express pain, traditional pain scales often fall short. Enter Dr. Julia Finkel, an anesthesiologist pioneering the Nociometer. This breakthrough device measures pain by assessing nerve response and pupil dilation. “In order to be most effective, I need to know why—what are the underpinnings of your pain?” Dr. Finkel told The Washington Post. “Depression can exacerbate it. A child’s environment can have a significant role in their health, a new meta-analysis shows. The systematic review, published in Pediatrics, found that lower neighborhood opportunity—measured by the Child Opportunity Index (COI)—is associated with higher risks of mortality, emergency department visits and hospitalizations among children. “We hope our review is a catalyst in the shift towards the development of interventions, done in partnership with families and communities to gain a deeper understanding of how place impacts care,” says Dr. Jordan Tyris. https://lnkd.in/ef2vFQRz
