We study health system reorganization and policy changes and aim to produce research evidence to improve the quality of health care, the power of policy on hospital organizational traits and context on racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in health care outcomes.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed disparities in care, especially in Black-serving hospitals. CHOPR Associate Director, Dr. Eileen Lake and colleagues investigated how these inequities affected nurses and patient outcomes.
In their recent study, LDI Fellows Eileen Lake, Connie Ulrich, and colleagues underscore the impact of leadership communication on the moral distress of nurses during COVID-19 in Black-serving hospitals (BSHs). Their findings revealed that nurses in higher BSHs reported more distress than those in lower BSHs, which was linked to inadequate communication from managers & PPE shortages.
