The Batture envisions a new waterfront community destination along the Mississippi River in New Orleans, transforming a historic private industrial site into a vibrant public destination with restaurants, bars, and amenities. RIOS collaborated with CICADA to create design guidelines to lead all future design efforts at The Batture. Encompassing meticulous site research and data collection, the plan ensures the new district feels like an extension of the city with the same vibrancy and scale. A primary goal was to encourage public engagement and create a comfortable, memorable experience for visitors at the river and surrounding avenues. The waterfront features resilient plant species in addition to a building strategy aligned with floodplain elevation levels. Our vision incorporates distinct planting palettes and layouts throughout the 10-acre site. Pedestrian-friendly avenues, meadows, curated front and back yards on individual lots, and flexible open spaces are home to eclectic plantings that embody the local charm and culture. With the aim to recreate the feel and rhythm of the surrounding neighborhood, the site has been divided into a series of 5 “blocks.” Each block will contain multiple small-scale building sites and will be divided by public-facing avenues running perpendicular to the parking lot, creating strong public connections between the parking/levee and the river. Circulation from the parking area will be purposefully directed down the sides of each building and into the structures at the river side. Flexible outdoor spaces and occupiable balconies are encouraged in order to keep activity primarily outside and engaged with the natural environment. It’s been tough to keep our ongoing work on The Batture a secret for the past two years, but we couldn’t be more excited to share with you all now that the project has been made public. As part of our preliminary work on The Batture, CICADA was tasked with compiling a document exploring New Orleans’ rich history of living on the Mississippi River and analyzing how the public connection with the river has evolved over time. This research served as a foundation for our planning and design of the Batture, grounding the future work in the history of the immediate site, the river and levee systems along with vernacular building strategies that have stood the test of time.
