The Americans who own and operate our critical infrastructure rely on our cybersecurity and protective security advisors for training on how to bolster their defenses against threats. We offer this kind of support across all sectors of critical infrastructure. Our advisors in Region 10 recently gathered at the Starbucks World Headquarters, Lumen Field, and other Seattle-area locations to work with stakeholders in the transportation, water/wastewater, education, event, and shipping communities to discuss topics ranging from security for mass gatherings to cyber crisis management. At this point, you might just call the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) a Super Bowl-era dynasty. Once again, technology developed and patented by ERDC was deployed at the Super Bowl in New Orleans providing unique security capabilities. In partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, the DHS Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the National Football League (NFL) League, and local, state and federal law enforcement, ERDC deployed systems designed to safeguard against potential vehicular and explosive attacks. Originally designed by ERDC to protect Soldiers in urban environments, Ready Armor Protection for Instant Deployment (RAPID) is an accordion-like security wall that can be set up quickly and serve as a bulletproof barrier to shield critical areas. Once RAPID was set up, the technology was wrapped in an NFL-branded cover, allowing the system to blend in. The second ERDC technology used at the Super Bowl was DETER, which is short for Deployable Expedient Traffic Entry Regulator. DETER is a barrier that protects against vehicular attacks, providing quick protection in multiple scenarios. Patented in 2022, DETER was developed when ERDC was researching ways to protect deployed troops at base camps. In partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC)—we released a joint Cybersecurity Advisory, #StopRansomware: Medusa Ransomware https://go.dhs.gov/wcW. This advisory provides network defenders with indicators of compromise (IOCs), tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs), and detection methods associated with Medusa ransomware activity identified through FBI investigations. Medusa is a ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) variant first identified in June 2021. As of December 2024, Medusa developers and affiliates have impacted over 300 victims from a variety of critical infrastructure sectors with affected industries including medical, education, legal, insurance, technology, and manufacturing. Actions your organization can take include ensuring operating systems, software, and firmware are patched and up to date; segment networks to restrict lateral movement from initial infected devices and other devices; filter network traffic by preventing unknown or untrusted origins from accessing remote services on internal systems. Organizations are encouraged to review the advisory and implement recommended mitigations to protect against the ransomware threat actor.
