Threat actors have previously tried to use DDoS attacks to undermine confidence in US and foreign elections, but these low-level attacks would not be able to prevent voters from voting or compromise the integrity of voting systems. Instead, the impact of such attacks would be limited to the potential disruption of some election-related functions available online, like voter look-up tools or unofficial election night reporting, highlighting the importance for voters to seek out information about how to vote and polling place information prior to Election Day. Read the new #PSA from the #FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to learn more about potential impact of DDoS attacks during US elections: https://lnkd.in/gqqVfJ4z As always, we encourage you to report any information concerning suspicious or criminal activity related to US elections to your local FBI field office.

A tech experiment gone rogue? Find out how a graduate student named Robert Tappan Morris, creator of the Morris Worm, unleashed a program that spiraled dangerously out of control and caused an estimated hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars in damage to early computer systems nationwide. In July 1989, thanks to #FBI computer experts, Morris was indicted for his maliciously clever cyber worm. The first Internet attack was a wake-up call for the country and the #cyber age to come. The Morris Worm inspired a new generation of hackers and a wave of Internet-driven crimes that continue to plague our digital systems to this day. #ICYMI, the #FBI and our global partners joined together and performed searches, arrests, and the disruption of more than 100 servers, debilitating the criminal infrastructure of multiple malware groups. These malware groups have infected millions of computers and claimed countless victims around the world and throughout the United States, including a hospital network, which not only cost millions of dollars but alarmingly put people’s lives at risk due to the compromised critical care online system.
