This morning, Mayor Harry Rilling, Senator Bob Duff, Senate Majority Leader, State Representative Kadeem Roberts, Commissioner Michelle Gilman of the CT Department of Administrative Services, Deputy Commissioner Charles E. Hewes, Ed.D. the CT State Department of Education, Dr. Alexandra Estrella, Superintendent of Norwalk Public Schools (NPS), Darlene Young, Norwalk Common Council President, and additional local and City leaders participated in a steel topping-off ceremony for the new South Norwalk School and celebrated the City of Norwalk recently receiving State funding for a roundabout next the new school. In April, the City of Norwalk held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new South Norwalk School, the community's first neighborhood school in over 40 years. The South Norwalk neighborhood school is also the City's first new school construction project under the new state reimbursement rate of 60%, saving the City millions of dollars. Today, nearly 6 months since the groundbreaking, everyone celebrated the placement of the final steel beam in the building's structure, a significant milestone in the construction process of the new South Norwalk School. The anticipated completion of the new school is scheduled for late summer 2025, in order to welcome students for the 2025-26 school year. In the late 1970s, South Norwalk lost its neighborhood school when the district closed Nathaniel Ely School on Ingalls Avenue to desegregate schools. Ever since, South Norwalk children have enrolled in various schools throughout the City outside of South Norwalk and have had to endure long bus rides to and from school. This has caused South Norwalk children and their families to miss out on the benefits afforded to students who have a neighborhood school. This new neighborhood school will finally provide South Norwalk children, ages PreK to 5th grade, with the option to attend this brand new, state-of-the-art school right in their community! Furthermore, the City and NPS thanked State leaders, specifically Governor Lamont and Senator Duff for continuing to invest in Norwalk's youth and the South Neighborhood community through a $2.5 million Community Investment Fund grant that will go towards the construction of a roundabout next to the new South Norwalk School. This school infrastructure project will help improve safety for all roadway users, particularly our students, when they enter this brand-new state-of-the-art school by promoting lower speeds, safe pedestrian crossing, and traffic calming in the area. #SteelToppingCeremony #NewSouthNorwalkSchool #CityofNorwalk #InvestingInEducation #InvestinginSchools

  • Yesterday, Mayor Rilling announced that he is deploying emergency equipment and a Norwalk Firefighter to Hickory, North Carolina, to assist in the State of Connecticut's response and recovery efforts to Hurricane Helene. This announcement follows Governor Ned Lamont's decision to deploy an urban search and rescue team to help with the Hurricane relief efforts. Norwalk Firefighter Peter Chila will join a group of seven other personnel from Stratford Fire Department, Westport Fire Department and Westport Police Department on a mission to set up communications where local radios and cell phones have been knocked out from Hurricane Helene. They will bring the Fairfield County Hazmat Command & Communications Unit, a regional asset that is stationed in Westport, known as "Field Comm-1" in an effort to reestablish communications between emergency responders and local government. The City of Norwalk is also deploying a Norwalk Fire Department utility truck and ATV to help navigate roads that have been severely compromised from the damage. This group of firefighters and police officers will deploy tomorrow, Friday, October 4th, and return on October 14th. "Hurricane Helene has caused unimaginable devastation across the South, including to those living in Hickory, North Carolina, where communications have been compromised between emergency rescue crews, residents and their local government," said Mayor Rilling. "The City of Norwalk stands with the people of Hickory, North Carolina and everyone impacted by Helene and hopes that our efforts to help reestablish communications in this area can make a difference in people's lives. I want to thank members of Norwalk's bravest for dedicating their time to help the people of North Carolina during this horrific time. I also want to thank Governor Lamont for swiftly approving a search and rescue team of state and local volunteers across Connecticut." The City of Norwalk will be reimbursed for these efforts through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The deployments are occurring under the authorization of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), a nationwide system for affected states to request lifesaving resources when the need arises. EMAC is implemented by the Connecticut Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security on behalf of Governor Lamont. #NorwalkStandswithHickory #HurricaneHeleneRecoveryEfforts

  • Yesterday, Mayor Harry Rilling was joined by Senator Bob Duff, Senate Majority Leader, State Representative Tracy Marra, State Representative Travis Simms, Common Council Member Greg Burnett, and Jeff Spahr from the City's Legal Department to recognize October as ADHD Awareness Month at the Norwalk Public Library. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity that impacts approximately 11 percent of school-age children. Symptoms continue into adulthood in more than three-quarters of cases. According to the CDC’s 2022 national survey, an estimated 7 million (11.4%) U.S. children aged 3–17 years have been diagnosed with ADHD. Mayor Rilling read a proclamation declaring October ADHD Awareness Month in the City of Norwalk and Senator Duff read a proclamation from Governor Lamont declaring October ADHD Awareness Month in the State of CT. This event focused on ADHD education for families of those with ADHD and aims to destigmatize ADHD to help those living with ADHD better understand their diagnosis.
