A Tribute to Strength and Resilience On August 31st, 2019, the community of Odessa was shaken by a mass shooting that claimed the lives of seven. Today, Odessa stands strong, remembering those we have lost while never undermining the resilience that our amazing community has shown over the last five years. We are Odessa Strong and Odessa Proud. ✅BrighterFuture #OdessaProud #OdessaStrong

From Hobby to Business  Marsha and her husband, Donnie Davis, met in Odessa back in 1989. In 2016, the pair took their first quilting class.  “It was something I wanted to do because I remember my mother making clothes when I was growing up. My mom and dad quilted things together,” Marsha shared.  Marsha tells us that after years of working as a nurse, a teacher, and a safety manager, she was ready to “retire.” The hobby she and her husband shared quickly blossomed into an at-home business.  “I really dreamed of starting this type of business after I retired,” Marsha said.  Now, the couple sells quilting cotton fabric, sewing machines, and teaches quilting classes for those looking to pick up a new hobby! In fact, they tell us they are one of the only Bernina sewing machine dealers around the Permian Basin.  In addition to their passion for quilting, they also volunteer for the local quilts for valor organization.  They tell us they are always looking for ways to help our community!  Wooden Spool Boutique   📱 (432) 272-0138  ✅BrighterFuture #OdessaProud

Opening Doors: How Mommy & Me is Creating a Safe Space for All We told you about Cheryl’s business, Mommy & Me, a few months back. She started the small business to make memories with her son Joshua, who is autistic. She tells us that it was her way of finding a way to keep him busy after high school and help him learn life skills. Over the last four years, Cheryl and Joshua have been selling t-shirts, cups, aprons, teddy bears, and more! Her dream after starting Mommy & Me was to eventually open a brick-and-mortar store. After years of operating out of their home and a trailer, that dream is coming to life! Cheryl is excited to announce that they have found the perfect location for their first storefront! She tells us that her goal is to show other families with autistic children that anyone with an intellectual disability can still achieve their hopes and dreams. “We want to help others with special needs. That’s why we will be incorporating a sensory shopping period, so parents can bring their kiddos in to shop without the distractions that come with typical overcrowded stores,” Cheryl said. Mommy & Me will be holding a grand opening on August 31st from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cheryl says she hopes the storefront becomes a safe space where everyone feels welcome! “I have seen the way our small business has helped Joshua advance his skills. I hope he can be an inspiration to others,” Cheryl shared. 📍 855 Central Drive 29-D 📱 (432) 296-3008 ✅BrighterFuture #OdessaProud

Honoring Beloved Former Mayor Today many Odessans gathered at First Methodist Church for a Celebration of Life to honor and remember former Mayor Larry Melton. He graduated from Odessa High School in 1956 and then went to Texas Tech. He made a huge impact on our community serving as a Council Member and then a mayor. Former Mayor Melton was the city’s longest-serving mayor at 11 years! We thank him for everything he did for our community. Mr. Melton will be dearly missed. ✅BrighterFuture #OdessaProud #OdessaStrong
