Standing Odessa Strong Five Years Later August 31st marks five years since tragedy struck the City of Odessa. Yet, that day showed many Odessans we are stronger together. Now, there is a place to honor the seven who lost their lives and the many others who were injured. The UTPB Bright Star Memorial stands tall on the UTPB campus. Tomorrow, you can see it for yourself by attending the Bright Star Memorial Dedication at 8 p.m. It is off Loop 338 and you can park in the sports field parking lot. Watch this video for more on how Odessans came together during this tough time. ✅BrighterFuture #OdessaProud The University of Texas Permian Basin Odessa Chamber of Commerce

At 3:45 this morning, Odessa Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire at Joy’s Mobile Home Park on Golder Ave.    When crews arrived, the outside of the single-wide trailer was on fire. There were three people inside the home when the fire started, but all safely made it out before OFR arrived. The Red Cross was notified to assist the family.    The following is a list of things you can do to help prevent fires:    -Install smoke detectors and test them regularly -Never leave cooking unattended  -Keep flammable materials away from heat sources  -Have a working fire extinguisher -Plan and practice a fire escape route

Shaping The Future An Odessa native is using his calling to help children and young adults in the Permian Basin. “I love my job because it’s made me who I am - a successful entrepreneur who has paved the way and helped other entrepreneurs in West Texas,” Pete McGarity said. The Odessa High graduate attended Texas Barber College from 1993 to 1995. A few years later he opened Headlines Barber Shop and then Headlines Barber College. Students 16 and up learn everything from haircuts to hair coloring. Pete hopes this knowledge will set them up for the future. Plus he offers scholarships to ease the financial burden. His dream is to give Odessa children a chance for a brighter future. ✅BrighterFuture #OdessaProud

Good Samaritan Helps Fire Victims Juan Sanchez was picking up his two young children from the home of his in-laws when he saw smoke. He drove by and his wife noticed a fire so he jumped into action! The Odessan started knocking on doors to get people out. “We were going from neighbor-to-neighbor. Some were asleep.” Odessa Fire Rescue reported they found a small shop, a single wide trailer house, and seven vehicles on fire. A dog was also found dead. “It feels good to have made a difference.” Juan says his 5-year-old son wants to be a firefighter when he grows up. We continue to see Odessans who will do what it takes to help others in need! ✅BrighterFuture #OdessaProud

From Rescue to Reward: The Story Behind Curious and Coward Dog Bakery Sonic and Ryder are both the inspiration behind the local dog bakery, Curious and Coward Dog Bakery. Evelyn Gordon, who is the dog mom of the pair, tells us that Sonic was found on the side of the road and was initially curious. Ryder, on the other hand, has always been the timid one. She tells us that Sonic eventually became sick, causing her to lose almost all of her teeth. Evelyn began making homemade soft dog treats for Sonic so she could still enjoy a yummy snack. “It improved her quality of life so much, and I thought maybe this could help other dogs too,” Evelyn shared. That’s how Curious and Coward came to be. Evelyn tells us it is her mission to make happy dogs happier and loved dogs feel even more love. Curious and Coward Dog Bakery offers dog treats made from natural ingredients and even dog birthday cakes! 📱- (325) 812-4051 ✅BrighterFuture #OdessaProud
