Santa Rosa Fire Department Declares the Official Start of Wildfire Season in Santa Rosa The City of Santa Rosa Fire Department officially declares Monday, June 10, 2024, as the start of this year’s wildfire season in Santa Rosa. Significant rainfall this year has led to significant growth of seasonal grasses and vegetation. Following the recent warm dry weather and increase in fire activity, the declaration is necessary to help ensure the community is better prepared for this wildfire season. Many residents have already taken proactive measures this season, including the abatement of dry seasonal grasses and other vegetation management measures. Regrowth is likely, given the rainfall this year, plans should be made to address any regrowth which will likely create a fire hazard later this season. To read more, visit: https://lnkd.in/gaTVPMhW

Maintaining Santa Rosa's extensive 512-mile street network is a year-round commitment. As part of this effort, the Transportation and Public Works teams works to repair pavement surfaces, utilizing techniques like pothole filling, crack sealing, and patching to prevent moisture damage. Each year, slurry seal treatments are applied to around 2.5 million square feet of city streets, preserving their quality and longevity. This year, the team will be combining the 2024 Slurry Seal residential pavement treatment with the Pavement Preventive Maintenance program for arterial streets. Preparation work such as crack sealing and striping removal is currently underway. The slurry seal application process begins June 12. All streets identified on the project map will receive slurry seal and restriping, however, many of the arterial streets will receive a modified restriping to add additional bike lines as designed in the Local Road Safety Plan. Slurry seal is a crucial preventive measure, involving the application of an emulsified asphalt mixture to protect streets from water damage and enhance resistance. Before application, cracks are sealed, repairs made, and roads cleaned. Once cured, all roads will be restriped, ensuring they remain safe and functional for the community.
