About us
The City of Wilson, NC is a vibrant community of nearly 50,000, driven by innovation and the arts. The city provides electric, natural gas, water and sewer, and/or broadband utilities to 35,000 households and businesses. Gig East is our collective effort to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation, our co-working space, the Gig East Exchange, located in the heart of Historic Downtown Wilson. Wilson's agricultural roots date back to our days as the world's largest brightleaf tobacco market. These days, Wilson is home to a thriving economy with leadership in sectors including agribusiness, manufacturing, finance, life sciences, next generation networking, and the arts. Wilson's emerging focus on innovation is driven by our strong history of investing in the infrastructure that supports what comes next. In 2008, we built Greenlight, the state's first fully-deployed fiber to the home network, and we've offered community-wide Gigabit service since 2013.

New affordable housing project coming to Wilson! Construction of Pender Crossing is officially underway after city officials joined project partners in a groundbreaking ceremony on August 16. Pender Crossing is a 48-unit affordable apartment community for residents earning between 40% and 60% of the area median income. Pender Crossing will provide 18 one-bedroom, 18 two-bedroom apartments, and 12 three-bedroom townhomes, including several units with features for those with disabilities. Woda Cooper Companies, Inc. said Pender Crossing will be an important new option for Wilson renters, including families with children, who have struggled to find suitable, quality housing at affordable rates. “The city of Wilson is committed to the pursuit of high-quality, affordable housing,” said Mayor Stevens. “We understand safe, enjoyable, affordable housing is imperative for families to thrive. We’re thrilled to be able to offer the Pender Crossing project to the community and extremely grateful to the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, Woda Cooper, and all that made this day possible . I can’t wait to see this project completed.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e3HMjxCy

My prayers go out to those who have been affected by this morning's tornado in Lucama and surrounding areas. The City of Wilson's Stormwater team members are in the office today reviewing precipitation and water level data. Also, team members are out around town (where/when safe) collecting photos and noting high water marks as Debby passes through. Data collection (especially photo evidence) helps when applying for grant funding to improve infrastructure! See what's going on at the Lake Wilson Spillway https://lnkd.in/e8VMmVAN See why our Hominy Swamp Floodplain Benching project will help create storage within Wilson. https://lnkd.in/e4gNm82j If you are a local to Wilson and want to help note flooding in your area, use our FixIt WIlson App to upload your photos of flooding!
