About us

A relatively small city of 7 square miles and 60,000 residents, Lancaster City is located within driving distance of Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Delaware beaches and the Jersey shore. But the City of Lancaster is about so much more than our geographic location. Lancaster City is a place where historic preservation and a cutting-edge arts scene live and thrive side by side; a city of neighborhoods that are safe and welcoming; a city that encourages entrepreneurship and investment; a city that values the cultural, ethnic, and diverse identities of our residents and guests.

  • Big news! 🚲⚡️ The City of Lancaster has expanded the Bike It Lancaster bike share program, bringing new options for active transportation to residents and visitors. As part of this expansion, 25 electric bikes, or e-bikes, have joined the fleet, providing an accessible, low-effort alternative to traditional bikes. The program will also extend its service area to include neighboring Manheim Township and East Lampeter. Since its launch in 2017, Bike It Lancaster has made it easy for users to take short trips across the city using active transit. With the Movatic app, riders can pick up a bike from any station and return it to any other station. The addition of e-bikes offers riders a faster, more convenient way to travel, especially when navigating hills or covering longer distances. Without a membership, e-bike rentals will be $3 for 30 minutes. With a membership, e-bike rides are $1.50 for the first hour. Riders must follow all traffic laws. The expanded bike share network now includes three stations in Manheim Township and one in East Lampeter. Users can pick up or drop off pedal bikes at stations located at Stehli Silk Mill, Stauffer Park, the Foundry Apartments and St. Joseph University. To learn more about the program, download the app, or locate a station, visit www.bikeitlancaster.com. #bikeitlanc #cityoflancasterpa

  • It's Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and we certainly have news to celebrate. The City of Lancaster recently received $7.75 million in U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development funding to continue its Lead Hazard Control Program citywide. The new funds will support lead inspections and remediation for about 300 homes, creating lead-safe homes across the city. Priority will be given to neighborhoods south of King Street and other targeted areas due to the age of housing and the presence of young children. Funding is limited to low- to moderate-income households. In 2019, the City was awarded a five-year, $9.7 million HUD grant to remediate 435 homes in certain census tracts south of King Street. Over 300 homes have been completed, with about $1 million left to meet the goal by May 2025. This funding, along with support from the PA Department of Health, enables the City to offer free lead hazard control for tenants and homeowners, with landlords contributing 10% of remediation costs. Funding from the DOH is earmarked for homes where children with lead-poisoning have been identified. "Lancaster's 2019 HUD lead paint remediation grant was transformative for the city. Over 300 homes South of King Street are now lead-safe. I am deeply proud of this work and grateful for the team behind it at City Hall. Removing lead paint hazards so our kids can stay healthy and reach their highest potential remains a top priority for my administration. The new $7.75M grant will help power this essential work into the future," said Mayor Danene Sorace. The Office of Healthy Homes also runs two other programs: the Healthy Homes Program, which addresses health and safety hazards such as accessibility and the Critical Repair Program, which provides emergency repairs to prevent displacement in owner-occupied homes.

  • Trees for Lancaster! 🌳 Yesterday, Mayor Sorace along with EPA Region 3 Administrator Adam Ortiz, Rep. Smith-Wade-El, and local climate advocates gathered to celebrate the City of Lancaster receiving $1 million to bolster our street tree program. The funds are made possible by the Biden-Harris Administration's Inflation Reduction Act and the USDA Forest Service in partnership with American Forests. Speakers also emphasized the importance of federal, state, and local action on climate. Lancaster continues to lead the way locally. With our flourishing stormwater program that can capture 65 million gallons annually — you can’t go far in Lancaster without running into a rain garden. We're also growing our urban tree canopy, launching an EV infrastructure plan, initiating a solar energy effort to reduce emissions, and recently adopted our new comprehensive plan that reimagines the City's relationship with the Conestoga River — establishing a 70-acre nature preserve and environmental center along it. Culliton Park's green infrastructure alone can capture 1.5 million gallons of stormwater runoff annually acting as a sponge for the area. This helps reduce flooding, stress on our combined sewer system, and pollution to our river. Plus, the rain garden's native plants provide important habitat.
