🗣️Public Information Newsbyte on Recent City Management Contract Update:🗣️ A Look Toward a Bright Tomorrow in Oak Park: By Mayor Marian McClellan Dear Oak Parkers, It is with great excitement that I pen this letter regarding the recent potential changes to our City Manager’s Office. As some may be aware, Oak Park’s longtime City Manager, Erik Tungate - MBA, ICMA-CM, IPMA-SCP, was recently named a finalist in the search for Royal Oak’s next top executive. I was newly elected Mayor when we hired Erik in 2012. We brought him on with the hopes of finding a leader equipped with the tools to invigorate our lagging local economy, create new business opportunities, offer financial acumen and improve city offerings and resulting quality of life in our community. What we’ve witnessed and worked towards together over the last decade-plus, has far exceeded our initial expectations and really set a new and exciting trajectory for the City of Oak Park. Erik and I recently attended the Michigan Municipal League Annual Conference to be recognized as a statewide finalist for planning excellence along our 9-Mile Corridor. Additionally, in partnership with you -our residents- we were able to shape a shared community vision for new and elevated community spaces and recreational amenities via the Elevate Oak Park Master Plan. Following bond approval last November, the City is beginning work on a new community hub and event center in the months to come. To list the tangible results and positive impacts of Erik’s tenure would be exhaustive and would certainly take far more time than he would tolerate or deem efficient. He is a tireless advocate, leader and strategist and Oak Park would not be where we are today without his efforts. That said, Oak Park City Council called a special meeting this past Tuesday Oct. 8,2024 and crafted a competitive contract offer to keep Manager Tungate, of which he accepted. We couldn’t be more thrilled to retain his talent and work ethic and are far from finished making Oak Park even brighter. Thank you for your years of service and leadership Erik. Now, let’s get to work! Yours in Service, Marian McClellan, Mayor

Today, city leaders (Mayor Marian McClellan) and community members officially unveiled the ‘Oak Park Community Mural’ via a formal ribbon cutting and community exhibition. The ‘Oak Park Community Mural’ was recently completed on the Oak Park Public Library by local artist and Oak Park native, Desiree Kelly. “This mural depicts a wonderful sampling of what makes our community unique and vibrant,” said City Manager Erik Tungate - MBA, ICMA-CM, IPMA-SCP. “The momentum in this area is palpable and I couldn't be more thrilled with the result. It unequivocally adds energy, excitement and color to an already well-loved community space. I can’t wait for even more community gatherings and comradery with the addition of a new event hub and community center coming soon.” Local artist, Desiree Kelly Art, is an award-winning artist. Known as Detroit’s premiere portrait artist and muralist, her work often features historical and public figures. She has worked for numerous large corporations as well as having her work featured in the MGM movie "RESPECT" depicting Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin. Her work can be experienced and seen all over metro Detroit in permanent and temporary public collections like the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building, Kuzzo's Chicken & Waffles, Eastern Market, the historical Alger Theater in Detroit, and now, the Oak Park Public Library. Her vision was selected by the Library Public Art Ad Hoc Committee and recommended for Oak Park City Council approval earlier this year. The group reviewed more than 30 applicants before selecting Kelly to create the piece. Her vision featured books, local school mascots, children playing, a nod to music, bicycling, and the Oak Park's Nine Mile Redesign artistic flower installation. #murals #discoveroakpark #elevateoakpark

The Nine Mile Redesign project was featured Michigan Municipal League Annual Conference in Mackinac as 1 of only 4 statewide Community Excellence Award finalists asked to present their placemaking projects. The MML 🏆 may have stayed in the U.P.
