Fall and winter bring respiratory viruses like RSV, #COVID-19, and #flu that affect our lungs. Washing hands, getting vaccinated, wearing a mask, and staying home when feeling sick are ways we can #stopthespread and protect our communities. Following the confirmation of Missouri's first human case of H5N1 Avian Flu, the St. Louis Department of Health advises residents with domestic or wild birds to be extra cautious. Wild birds like crows and songbirds, known carriers of the virus, can transmit it to humans. Chicken owners are particularly encouraged to follow recommended safety precautions. 🟠Wear protective gear 🟠Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds after handling the animals or items belonging to them 🟠Keep other animals such as dogs or cats away from the birds 🟠Report deceased birds that recently suffered an illness to the Missouri Division of Animal Health at (573) 751-3377 or animal.health@mda.mo.gov. Dr. Mati Hlatshwayo Davis, MD, MPH, FIDSA, Director of Health for the city of St. Louis and advisory board member for Neuro 360, praised the application's equity components and promise for public health, saying, "We are all doing the best we can with what we have, but the best just isn't enough to keep up with the needs of diverse and vulnerable communities right here in this post-Covid, climate-changing, constantly shifting world. "Under this really unique structure, I think there's some exciting things we can do, and now is the time to do it." If the application is successful, it would potentially bring $160 million over 10 years to the region promising opportunities in jobs, education, research, industry and healthcare.
