About us
At Civic News Company, our mission is helping people understand how America works so they can make it work better. At Civic News Company, high-impact journalism is at the core of what we do. We believe that local-first journalism, rooted in the places we cover, is critical to earning and maintaining our readers’ trust. Civic News Company journalists strive to develop subject matter expertise and produce work that brings issues alive for readers, allowing them to engage in informed debate and take action on issues that matter to them. As an organization grounded in the values of equality and antiracism, we prioritize coverage of the key systems that shape this country and prioritize serving communities often neglected by traditional media. Our nonprofit newsroom is proud to be independent, always seeking the truth without consideration of profit or ideology, which we believe is crucial to fulfilling the promise of American democracy.

I am so excited about our newest piece of Healthbeat: community health "forecasts" in partnership with the brilliant Katelyn Jetelina and her incredible Your Local Epidemiologist newsletter. New Yorkers, YLE New York is how you'll know what bugs are going around, how much to worry about mosquitoes, the local health consequences of climate change - - and what steps you should take to protect yourselves, your families, and your communities. We're thrilled to announce that Healthbeat News is partnering with Katelyn Jetelina and her Your Local Epidemiologist team to launch a community health "forecast" for New York. The organizations will collaborate to co-produce and distribute to New Yorkers the analysis and expertise of epidemiologist Dr. Marisa Donnelly in Healthbeat’s New York newsletter. In announcing the partnership, Civic News Company founder Elizabeth Green said: "It’s never been more important to make evidence-based information and reporting on public health as widely available as possible. [This partnership] is an opportunity for us to bring science and journalism closer together, and to serve our communities.” Read more about the news here: https://lnkd.in/eiCGCwtb

When there is an absence of local reporting, conspiracies and confusion can take root. Votebeat was created to counteract those threats, and its local reporters do this through fact-based, nonpartisan reporting on voting and elections. A reader recently said that Votebeat provides, "voting information I can trust." We're committed to continuing this crucial coverage. Support our local reporting in this vital election year: https://lnkd.in/epEKEPsK

Today, we’re announcing two new hires: Shani O. Hilton, Civic News Company’s new editor in chief, and Andrew Golis, our new chief operating officer. Shani previously served as managing editor and senior vice president at the Los Angeles Times, and before that, as VP of news and programming at BuzzFeed News. Andrew previously served as WNYC’s chief content officer, and vice president at Vox Media. “Shani and Andrew could both work anywhere they want in media,” said Civic News Company CEO Elizabeth Green. “We are incredibly fortunate that, for their next chapters, they are choosing to work here, on the problem we put first: delivering the highest quality local news about the most important civic topics to the communities that need it most.”

Civic News Company is thrilled to announce that Healthbeat will launch this summer in New York City and Atlanta. Healthbeat, which we’re launching in partnership with KFF Health News, will join Chalkbeat and Votebeat in the Civic News Company family. Healthbeat will help local communities understand public health issues such as infectious disease, air and water quality, and nutrition. It will also help counteract the politicization of public health and allow communities to engage with issues that affect health equity. We’re so excited that Charlene Pacenti will serve as Healthbeat’s inaugural Editor-in-Chief. Charlene is an experienced journalist who has steered local news and digital startups at The Miami Herald and national health coverage at United Press International. Charlene will build, launch, and lead Healthbeat in partnership with KFF Health News’ team of national public health journalists. Stay tuned for Healthbeat stories coming this summer! More to come at Healthbeat.org, and in the meantime, you can sign-up for Healthbeat’s newsletters:
